Do you think I have killed my CPU?

It's on my old machine (At least 3 years old). I had been planning to test the new IC-Perhelion on it.
So ran some tests without changing anything.

Then turned off, and left it an hour- (was getitng dinner). Came back, unplugged everything. Grounded myself on the psu. Unclipped the stock amd heatsink.

Then when I lifted, it seemed a bit jammed, so tugged a little harder, and the cpu came off with the cooler.

I twisted the cpu with the cooler and it came off find. Then I used a cotton cloth and some of my girlfriends make up remover to remove the dried in paste, which had been there when the system was first built. After checking everything and it looking grand. Reseated the cpu. small peasized blop of paste.

Then turned it on. The computer powered up, all the LED's and fans are whirring. But the monitor is showing "No display". The GPU was always a little tempermental. So plugged it into the onboard instead. Rebooted. Still no display.

Reset the CMOS. Reseated the CPU again, checking for any contaminants etc. Then resat my GPU.
Reset the CMOS again. and removed 2x1GB RAM sticks and reset CMOS again. Still no display.
So- you guys think the CPU is dead?

It's a AMD Athalon 64 x2 4400+.

I can't recall the mobo's name, and i don't see it printed on it anywhere.

If you are not getting a display it means you machine is unable to finish its POST (Power On Self Test).

Sounds like either the CPU is dead or motherboard im afraid. :(

Can u try the CPU in another mobo?

I bet your motherboard has nForce 430 chipset :P. And that happened to me a few weeks ago cos I forgot to move the cooler around before ripping apart, pulling out my 965. Still works fine though. Guess I just got lucky.

Anyway, Athlon processors are cheap to replace. Look for a 5600 if you 4400 is dead.

Good news!
I think it was jsut a bent CPU pin. I took it out, one of the pins was a bit bent, so fixed it with tweezers, then gave the chip a good clean. Took a few tries but managed it to give some display.

Had an issue with refitting the RAM, but it was due to a loose ball of dust, now displaced.

Everything seems to be working fine and dandy :D Thanks for the help

Yeah- I asked her to bring my thermal paste removal kit to her house, but she forgot :P

I certainly won't be using make-up remover on my shiny i5, even if it is for sensitive skin ;p

I do hardware reviews which means I am always swapping my CPU heatsink. Nail vanish remover has always done a grand job for me :)
