Do you think that?

Do you think that there will be a card in the 6 series which will be better than the 480 in performance (Min, Max, Average fps) for the same budget with less power and noise?

Hard to say, but there's a good chance.

I would be willing to bet that the power efficiency will be better, but I imagine performance will vary from game to game. The 6-series is, by all indications, just a minor revision to the 5-series, so I would expect to see the same general characteristics as the 5-series, with somewhat improved performance and power efficiency.

... of course the dual-GPU card will be much "faster" than a GTX480, at least in terms of average framerate, just like the 5970 is now. But I suspect that's not what you were asking about?

Sorry I didn't make it clear, I was wondering if a single card will be better than the 480?

There is going to be a dual-GPU 6-series card, so yes, it will be "faster". Just like the 5970 is today. The 5970 uses less power than the GTX480 under full load as well.

Of course, chances are that the dual-GPU card will suffer from microstutter, just like the 5970 does (see this thread), but it should still give a smoother overall gaming experience.

But really - who knows. This is all just guesswork extrapolating out from what we know (that the 6-series is a minor modification to the 5-series architecture).

I'm going for a 480 tomorrow. Half the reason is I want to enjoy it now rather than be inundated by uni work around the 6 series release and not really being able to use it :p the other half of the reason is people aren't expecting a massive increase in performance. I'm going for a 480 now and changing at the next die shrink if I feel the need to.

Seriously? Are you just trying to stir things up? You already started a six series thread along with a load of other random threads. Why do you need it answered with guesses time and time again?

the simplest answer is WE DON'T know, till the thing is in proto type or released means AMD keep thier mouth shut unlike Nvidia.

at this moment in time we can only guess and a educated guess at that, there should be some inprovment over the last gen of ATI that is for sure. Or why bother?

gtx 480 is what 10% faster than 5870, im pretty sure 6870 will at least match it.

But its all just a guess, the only way to know for sure is to wait for official stuff

I hope you mean with a independ party we all know about happened with a few review sites and Nvidia after that i wouldn't trust ethoir

We have to guess at Performance, Price and Efficiency.... oh and subjective noise rating lol. Even at this stage ati wont have fixed a price so how the blazes are we gonna predict that amongst others?

Note: I am venting tonight soz.

I don't even know if the chip has tapped out yet, if it hasn't then even ATI don't know how well it will perform. They will have an idea but we all know how different the idea and the reality can be...... just look at the GF100 based chips.

To be honest, ATi has come a long long way from what they use to be.. always tailing behind Nvidia and having the market taken evenly by them. They seem to have caught up and in some instances beaten the Nvidia cards. But like all things it can easily be changed around.

Like how everyone was burning the GTX 400 series card saying they are too loud and too hot with too much power consumption but then with those in mind they actually perform slightly better in some instances giving smoother performance and better driver support.

So i guess what im trying to say is, it's an even battle now where everything is pretty much 50/50 split and depending on what both sides do it could go either way. ATi could be on top with the 6 series cards beating Nvidia in performance/power/noise/heat but then a few months later Nvidia will counter with something similiar or better.

Just have to wait and see :)
