They say if its too good to be true, then 9/10 times it is... so have a look at this.

Im after a laptop for gaming, so my mum can have my old one for emails and internet surfing. So after looking around i decided on a XPM 1730. Checked the bay and a few other sites...

found one on a site, not the bay, but a tree with midget gems hanging of it. Normal cost of a 1730 is about £1000-£1200.

This guy wanted £450.....

So i emailed asking if i can come see this laptop, test it and pay cash if i like it...

got this back

"Hello,

Firstly I would like to say that it is still available. The price I would like to obtain for the Dell xps M1730 is £450. All shipping costs are included in the price. The item is new, in original box and it comes with full warranty. If you are interested to buy it from me I have to tell you that I will only do this through eBay. In order to start the transaction email me your full name, destination address (for shipping) and your eBay ID.
As soon as I have the details I will forward them to eBay and they will send you an invoice with more details, confirming our transaction!

I will send the item via UPS overnight. It should arrive within 24 hrs. I will have it ready for shipping as soon as you reply with the requested details.

I wait your reply with great interest.

Cheers,
Bertha "

Now, reading a few threads on here, and being a bad speller and grammer person myself, i noticed a few odd wording and such. Also the seller did not advertise on the bay, so i wonder why he wants me to go this route now?

I asked him again, can i come and see this laptop, in person and test it before paying...

i got this back;

"i live in uk...but for the moment i`m away of the town relocated with my work.for that i choose ebay beacause i think it will be more easier and more safe for us.if you still interested and you agree the price just let me know as soon as possible and we can have a deal.

please email me as soon as possible and let me know what you want to do because i have more interested buyers

regards"

Again, some odd words.....

Think im putting the £450 away and not bothering... £450 for a £1200 laptop - still in the box, warranty too... hmmmmm..... i think this is a 'walkaway' deal...

What do you guys think?

Rule number one of using the bay or alternate auction sites, if you have any doubts, don't purchase. It is a big sum of money to be dealing with anyway, try and find a more reliable seller, with positive feedback, or go through a proper online shop.

Why on earth would someone advertise on one site only to say you can only purchase it through another?

If it sounds dodgy, it is dodgy tbh

arrange a "date" with him, to list on the bay as a 1 day auction with a buy it now price you both agree on.... that way you're protected (kinda, better than nothing) if things go bad....

My daughter recently saw a car in a well known advertiser mag that was "too good to be true". The vendor also wanted settlement through "ebay shipping".

Obvious scam and the item was swiftly removed from the advertiser mag.

This smells like a bigger scam than the guy who tryed to scam an american out of a macbook, which ended im him being sent a ring binder :D
