I switch my PC and monitor off at the wall while they're not in use. I was sent one of those energy meters when I changed electricity suppier and went around the house checking standby power.
Do you turn off your PC when you aren't using it?

Put it on sleep when I go out or to bed. Otherwise it's always on.

Desktop goes into hibernate for the night unless patches/downloads have been scheduled

I do love seeing those calcs. It really brings home just how much you can save just by turning stuff off.

My server no, my main rig sometimes but I run folding@home so keep it on quite a lot.

I turn mine off. It's a macbook pro, it boots up quicker than I'll ever really need it to, I can cope with waiting 30 secs. I'm aware of the electricity costs and its pointless and inefficient for me to have it on for an hour that I'm out when it can be on within seconds of my return anyway.
Since my iphone is alright for the odd google or check of the emails, my laptop spends more time off.

yes, it would be silly not to really. why use more electric for no reason. i will occassionally leave it on over night running memtest or occt to check stability, or leave the laptop on if its in the middle of downloading, but not when its doing absolutly nothing.

turned off. With SSD, doesn't take long to start up. Make a cuppa, it's on before I know it.
I leave the laptop always on. The bugger has a tendency to wipe out my quicklaunch taskbar when it's off :/ Can stay hibernating for over a week.

I have one of those "One-Click" powerstrip extension leads, so the monitor, printer and speakers all get turned off at the same time.

Rocket dock icon has this shortcut ... One click and its suspend to ram

Acronis wakes the machine at 4am - does a quick backup and falls asleep once done.

I'm sure you can downscale if you really try. It could be difficult and involve some compromises but is a good project to get in to. I downscaled from 10Tb/webservers/mail servers to just 2Tb of vital data, lost gigabit also but am very happy with the results.
Yes definitely do this ... I've got one machine that bizarrely consumes 7W even when shutdown. I have to investigate when I get time
Just to throw this in as people are talking about bills etc.
I don't live with parents, and pay my own bills. But from my experience switching the PC off when not in use only saves me about £5 a month. I'd continue to switch it off when not in use if I was saving about £12+ a month, but this isn't this case for me.
I do have a watt meter, and the PC, while on a game, takes about 600 - 700W, on the desktop it uses about 300W, if I can remember right.
