Do You Understand PSU's ?

Can anyone who understands PSU's consider this and let me know please.

Is there a PSU where you connect the power cables to the relevant peripherals / motherboard etc., then any unused power cables can simply be unplugged and disconnected from the PSU completely ?

This would improve the airflow and cooling.

I have a 1010w PSU and as you can imagine there are a lot of power cables coming out of it - about 50% of which aren't being used.

Is this a possibility ? Has no one else thought of this ?

Yeah, he's right you are after a modular PSU. There are loads to choose from (albeit at slightly higher prices than their non modular counterparts.)

The most talked about ones are usually from Corsair or BeQuiet, but there are some good ones from other brands too.

Being new to this, I don't know if this will reply to all of you or whichever reply I clicked on......

Nope, never heard of a modular PSU - but I guess that is what I am looking for. Thanks a lot guys, be shopping soon !

As requested spec is...

Asus M2 N32 SLi DeLuxe Motherboard
AMD Quad Core 9550 Phenom
NVidia GT 9600 x 2
DVD / CD Combo writer
Hard Drives 300Gb Velociraptor
1.5 Tb WD
300Gb x 2 Maxtor
500Gb Hitachi
750 Gb Maxtor
Hauppauge WinTV 88x DVB - T Hybrid Tuner / Demod
2 x 120mm fans
1 x 80mm fan
Had to take out my SB Awe 64 Gold (with 8mb upgrade) due to lack of slots
Forgot to add the 4Gb kit OCZ Reaper 1066

If I were you I'd swap that Phenom for a Phenom II. They are quite inexpensive these days.

I think with that 750w is still probably a lot more than required.

To OP: Modular yes.

And looking at your spec regarding the power output, you have gone overkill on that one :P - I'm guessing your rig would use around 250 - 300W on load at best.

Yep overkill.
To me is same as future proofing, but now I need a modular PSU so will probably be looking for 1000w ish. Also need some decent size HDD's, 1.5 Tb+ (x 4 or 5). And some newer graphic cards. And my motherboard is getting on a bit . Hmm, wonder if Blueray rewriter is affordable yet...... wouldn't mind a 22" LED / Plasma. And to think I started off with a ZX81 !!!

People are always trying to future proof their hardware, bit its likely that in x years when you upgrade your other hardware you are likely to change your PSU too.

u mean LCD right, erm blu-ray writers still 100£ plus

He could mean LED backlighting :P

And I would never recommend TV grade screens to be used with a PC. You are far better off with an IPS or VA panel @ 22" for many reasons (viewing angles, colour gamut, response times, dithering, colour bleed etc) which you can get away with in TVs, but you would get slaughtered for if you mentioned in the monitors forums :P
