Dodgy phenom 9850?

After seeing the this week only offer on the phenom 9850, i thought why not, as it was a significant upgrade from my old cpu and it was cheap.

My old cpu was very stable, could run multiple torture tests and no crashes. However my new 9850 seems to crash, giving me a core clock interrupt bsod.

This was using prime 95 and the 2nd test down, and at stock settings. If the bsod is right, the problem is a 2nd core and is always the same.

I've tried underclocking the 2nd core, but it doesnt seem to make much difference. The only other bit of hardware thats changed is the ram, which ive upgraded to corsair ones.

Any thoughts? should I rma it?

P.s another thing ive noticed is i cant complete the windows aero assessment thing, gets stuck on decoding audio and then stops.

What temps are you running at?

Did you clear the CMOS when replacing the CPU?

Not to put a dampener on things but Phenom 1s are notorious for not being great for stability. Bit-Tech run a torture test for their motherboard reviews, looping 3DMark06 and Prime95 for a day. Although most Intel and AMD Athlon or Phenom IIs seem to pass, I think every Phenom I based rig failed to have both still running at the end of the test.

Also, I think the Phenom 9850 is quite power hungry. Do you know what is the maximum wattage rating for CPUs on your motherboard?

Temps are a little high, although I heard these are hot cpu's. its around 30-35 idle and 50-55 full load. And thats with watercooling kit on the cpu. Haven't tried clearing the cmos, all i did was flash to the newest bios.

Not sure about the wattage but the asus site says my mobo fully supports the 9850 be with the latest bios. I've checked the pins, reseated it, reapplied paste.

It was only after I bought it i thought to read up about it. although some people seem to have ones which are 100%

The list I found said you need bios 1705 or later. Fingers crossed this sorts it. Otherwise you may have a duff CPU.
Also, try testing the memory for erros.

Ran memtest, no problems there. So it boils down to the one problem, the cpu. Not sure what I should do.

It doesnt happen normally, only when the cpu is seriously under stress. On the flip side i feel like ive got a duff chip in my otherwise good system :(

Try putting your old chip in & testing. If it's OK, i'd be inclined to think you have a duff CPU. Thats very rare but occasionally happens. Plus as these chips discontinued a while ago, they may have been hanging around / travelling a bit.
What power supply do you have ? is there any concievable way the extra power consumption vs your old chip could be too much ?

My psu isn't the most exspensive out, but its rated at 750w but im probably only drawing about 300w max out of it. With the old chip in it runs fine, no crashes with prime95.

I've been reading lots of topics along similar lines to this, mostly solved with a replacement. Maybe the early phenoms had a lot of duff ones going out to sell.

what brand is it?

if it's cheapo psu then it won't be a true 750w psu.

phenom I cpus takes a lot of power under load...

Its a CiT 750w, on the psu its got (+3.3v 30a) (+5v 30a) (+12v1 24a) (+12v2 24a) (-12 0.3a) (+5vsb 2.5a)

I might consider getting a quality psu from work (curry's) and test it, then return it afterwards to eliminate the possibility.

I might try my older el cheapo psu, about 450w, and see if it bsods quicker.

Oh i've had an idea, should i try to disconnect any devices that aren't important from the psu, like case fans? and extra ram sticks? then run prime95?

I think i've solved it!!!!!

Bios set the cpu to 200mhz fsb, which is fine, but the voltage was set to auto. I assumed this was fine, as cpu z and amd overdrive are showing 1.3v which is the right setting.

When i set the voltage at 1.325 in the bios, no bsods. Something is causing my core voltage to show 1.3v when it clearly wasn't.

Right now im running 2 stress tests at the same time and no bsods!!!!

Hallelujah!!!

how are you getting on?

I too have the same motherboard as you and I too seen this phenom chip on offer at overclockers.

Can i asked what you have upgraded from and what gains you are seeing, I am contemplating removing the board but to be honest its all running fine, just finding hard to resist the offer :D
