Just wondering, but if say i made a game server on an extra computer that i made out of spare parts.. would i need another key if i wanted to play on that server on my main PC?

or just the one key? ive only ever made a couple of small servers before but they have been on the same computer as i play on.

thanks in advance.

Depends on the game and how you're setting it up.

For example, with Counter Strike you could use the 'server' machine to set up a 'new game' and then join that over LAN/internet from your new PC. In this case both machines would need their own key/account (because the first PC could also be used to play the game on, as well as hosting the game for others to join).

However, that's not a very good way of doing it - and you can setup a 'proper' server (download HLDS) on the first machine, that just acts as the server for everyone else to join. Because the first machine is just a server and can't be used to play the game, then it does not require a seperate key.

Most servers don't require a seperate key, as the files used to set them up are different to the files used to play the game, and so the server can't be used to actually play the game on its own, and so does not require a key at all.

Hope that makes sense :)

most games have a dedicated server software download available somewhere on the net

this is a separately installed programme to the game, and usually just has a plain text console for controlling it.

its a separate programme to the game, and is usually unlicensed so you dont need key to install it. this is usually to promote the Multiplayer community :)
