As title - does a gaming mouse really make any difference for gaming over an ordinary mouse? I mostly play fps games, and if so what would you recommend?

Dont want to spend a fortune, but must be quality, and I have smallish hands - so comfortable would be nice. This is a bit vague I know but any advice would be great.

Happy new year all.

It supposedly does (I have no experience though.) The amount of DPI allows you to make much more minute movements with the mouse which is good for stuff like FPS's and other sensitive aimer games.

Thanks for that - will wait for some others to chime in with suggestions perhaps.

Define "gaming mouse"? If you mean "Haz kewl litez nd logoz nd 40 butonz" then no chances are its not worth the money. If you mean "Has a top grade sensor and lens matched with excellent firmware and a comfotable grip and weight." then it is well worth it.

Personally I use a Zowie EC1 Evo because it is the most comfortable (for me) optical mouse that I could find. It has a great sensor and works well at the lower sensitivities that I use.

Just remember a decent grip and weight for you and a sensor that works well at the sensitivites you use is far more useful than 20 side buttons, flashing lights and 11000 DPI will ever be. There is a reason pro quake players used and still use things like the WMO and IMO, it fits them and its what they are used to. Comfort is king.

e: In the end the only way to find a mouse you are really comfortable with is to try as many as possible. Since my trusty old WMO1.1 broke earlier this year I have been through: IMO1.1, Razer Deathadder, Steelseries Xai, Steelseries Sensei, Steelseries Kana, Steelseries Kinzu, Logitech G400, Zowie AM-GS, Zowie-AM, before finally settling on the EC1.

Some gaming mice come with adjustable weights (I know of the Gigabyte M8000X Gaming Mouse) has that, as I sold one xD Maybe look out for one of those weight-adjustable mice, they should be quite good and adjustable to your individual needs.

Some of the best gamers in the world are still rolling with 15 year old microsoft and logitech mice. Personally I've gone from ms 3.0, IMO 1.1, wmo, logitech 510, razer DA, DB, salmosa, Zowie AM.....but have recently reverted to my wmo again.

I used to love my 3.0 but could never get get on with it again after the re-release, perhaps because I had gotten too used to the wmo. I do rate the zowie AM though.

There could be a case to be made for how much you've played or how good you've gotten at a game (particularly fps i would imagine) as to whether you can easily accept/adapt to a new mouse.

Dat intellimouse explorer 3.0 <3

Some mice have horrendous prediction, where any large movement will be "corrected" to assume you wanted to draw a completely straight line. This can cause huge problems in FPS games as your instinctive move to the right and up to someone's head can end up being translated in to a completely horizontal line - not what you wanted.

Have a google around.

A 'gaming' mouse will not make you good if you're not already good. It just might be more comfortable and slightly more natural for you to use. I guess the million extra buttons some mice have may be good for some people in some games, I only use the main ones on mine plus one thumb button even though my mouse has more.

Also a decent optical sensor should provide linear response, cheaper ones & lasers generally don't do this if you move the mouse quickly which can have a negative impact on your ability to click accurately. However, there are plenty non-gamer mice with decent sensors so don't know if this counts! e.g. the MS intellimouse 3.0 as mentioned above (Mine broke :/)

A simple answer to your question,

Will it make your movements more accurate? Yes

Will it make you a better player? No

Copied from my previous post:

What do you use today? Are you a palm player or a finger tip player? Most steelseries mouses I have found to be pretty small and hence not suitable for me (I'm a palm player)

Definition to help you (my opinion of it)

Palm player = I place my palm solely on, it is hardly ever off the mouse and is used to move the mouse and I have a big palm area. Hence most might find a bigger mouse more suitable (dependant on hand size )

Finger Tip / Claw = As it sounds really, claw like shape with your fingers doing most of the work. Your palm is raised so size might not matter as much assuming you don't get cramp

Let us know where you fit in above and I am sure we can chuck some recommendations or personal opinions.

FYI - I have a Zowie EC1 eVo

P.S. I might do a post on the FAQ on mouses and get it stickied, though I am sure if you google it your find a little bit more info :)

I would say they do make a difference. It isn't going to turn your into a pro, but having hardware that can support how you like to play makes it worth the cost imo.

My two recommendations as someone with small hands is the Razer Deathadder or the Steelseries Kana.

I disagree, the Deathadder is not a small hand mouse, it's basically a MS 3.0 in disguise.

The Kana being a steelseries mouse, it won't surprise me if that's small :)

Also in addition to the above, what's your budget? :)

ive gone throuhg a couple of gaming mice now, and to be fair if you use someone else's standard mouse you notice the difference, i play all my games and use windows in 8200dpi its extremly fast at first but you get used to it, i use it for games like WoW and BF4 and other titles, if its gaming your wanting it for then they are a great addition to your rig for just normal everyday use you could buy a low end mouse instead, i personally settled with the logitech g600. yes it has lights and loads of buttons hence why i use it for WoW, but you dont actually notice it all untill you use them.

If you're accurate with your current mouse then no, not really. If you like stupidly high DPI, or the ability to change the DPI and have extra buttons then a gaming mouse is good.

If you're coming from something cheap and nasty, or wireless then yes you will notice a difference - response rates etc.

One of the players in my old Q2 clan was extremely good (Quake50) and had the world most basic keyboard and mouse. My view is that a good mouse will make the game more enjoyable but it won't make you play any better in itself.

I'm using a WMO and before that I used both MX300/G1's. I've tried many of these 'gaming mice' and they really don't impress me or help my game in any way (I'm talking FPS games such a Quake 3). My advice would be to keep it basic and play with what you feel most comfortable with, and not buy into the hype of a mouse that has a baaazillion DPI or other on the fly rubbish. Function over fashion any day of the week.

I didn't know that Q50 played Q2!

Yep he was in Rv (Revenge) and we played a lot of Q2 DM and CTF before moving on to Q3. He was also in 4K too of course but I wasn't in that clan so only played alongside him in Rv. He was utterly devastating with the rail gun.

This is the big thing for me. Hugely annoys me.

Best thing for a mouse is one with a very high DPI, as you can set that to max, with a very low movement speed in the OS. This gives you a very smooth and accurate experience compared to basic mice.

A keyboard is best chosen with the features it has. I wanted a no nonsense one with mechanical switches and basic function keys, so I opted for a (special) Filco.

Choose the peripheral on what you want from it, not what has been stuck onto the box or said by some 'pro' gamer who doesn't even use it.

edit: I'd also recommend the Logitech G9x! (if it's still on sale?)

I just don't remember that's all as I was in Rv for both Q2 and Q3 (Rg) 'late '98 onwards :p Must have been just a few games like!
