does a normal modernish graphics card need the 24 pin connector?

basically my hp pavilion is now gutted and ive put the bits in the custom atx case even certain front panel options that were removable..

typical of hp amongst others i suppose but this board requires a gpu for visual(unless s-video port was their alternative to gpu dedication) and i took the x300se out and put it in my missus vista machine see what improvements it makes(some i guess) and for now will stay there.

so basically this hp/custom system needs a gpu so i put in my 210 just to test make sure i connected everything correctly however i get no visual via hdmi or vga, but the computer is running , i tried this in when all was the hp case and same thing.

the psu is a bestec(hp i guess) 300w with 19a +12v so technically more powerful than the 250w liteon in the veriton so im at a road block as to why its doing this and so i was wondering whether the 210 too good for the machine or 20 pin power point is not enough(dont think the acer has 24 pin mind) or could it be something else? i pull out pci card adapters and unplug hdd/opticals thinking a power shortage and nothing still..

while the x300se 128mb might be decent for old machines(seems okay for windows 7 aswell) i dont particularly want to spend money on another one just so i can sell the thing.

any suggestions?

Those PSU's are utter garbage. You'll want to get a better PSU to start with.

Most modern GPU's will need either 1x 6-pin and/or 1x 8-pin connectors. The motherboard is what needs the 24-pin power, that's not optional. If the GPU has power connectors then those will need to be connected.

EDIT: Holy balls, how old is that PC? Those specs are from like 2008. :p

You're going to sell it? Who to?

Thhat machine is "left out in front garden for scrap man" fodder.

If you really want to get it working, see if there is a bios update avail.

That Geforce 210 is dismally slow. Like high end in 2005 level. Although it's a good bit faster than that X300 SE you've got! :p

It doesn't need any extra power connectors so you're right in thinking it's powered through the PCIe interface which comes from the mobo's main connector...

I'm a bit alarmed by this. It's possible the 20 pin isn't providing enough current, in which case you're likely to damage something or melt the connector.

In all seriousness, your post doesn't make an awful lot of sense. I'm reading that you've moved the innards of an HP Pavilion to another chassis, and put the X300SE into a separate machine running Vista. As you need a GPU on the ex-Pavilion machine, you've put in a 210 and you're not getting any display. The PSU in the ex-Pavilion is a bestec 300W. I have no idea where a 250W Liteon or a "veriton" come into it!

With an HP that old, any number of things could be causing issues, from a lock out on the motherboard to only support parts available from HP to avoid upgrades, to the 210's PCI-E2.0 not being supported (even though PCI-E is designed to be backwards compatible).

My suggestion is fairly simple, if the X300SE used to work in the ex-Pavilion, put it back in there and stick the 210 in the other halves' Vista machine. Before that though, I'd probably try running the motherboard/CPU/RAM/GPU/PSU outside the case completely just to rule out any shorts. If it works outside the case but not inside, then have a check to make sure all your stand-offs are in the right places, and for anything protruding from the motherboard or case that might be touching then it's installed.

Hope it's an awesome CPU'ed Pavilion to make all this messing round and hassle worth it mate. :D

look i know ive been asking a lot of questions and not one have been about, quad cores, 8 packs, ddr3/4, r9, sli, gtx or ti cards and other fancy stuff, but dont mean you got to be a-holes towards me..

i like tatting with old tech so thats why i do it, i dont always have the money nor do i justify the prices of some of the tech you guys prefer or suggest in 400-1000 quid builds, yeah it might be nice, but i dont pc game like i used to and only lately got into linux more and the likes of xbmc even if i dont have it all professionally set up, im not a technician or computer whiz, im pretty sure if i was i wouldnt be coming here asking questions about budget stuff..

the geforce 210 is mine and staying mine unless i fine better then ill let the missus have it, i just wanted to test it in the hp while i was testing the x300 in the missus computer which ive built out of salvage parts(she has a fancy windows 8.1 laptop and dont always use either so dont need a fancy desktop) because the board i put in has geforce 6100/405 graphics and given vista is a memory hog i wanted to see what difference it makes and the fact i brought a geforce 9300 ge thats a dell and has that stupid dms-59 port which i havent got a cable for yet..

i write a lot for explaining things at times so to some who any miss understandings..

1. hp pavilion i got for a tenner all original spec.
2. custom atx case was empty and board i put in that had cel d and agp port eventually died or shorted.
3. as a result i couldnt sell it and its a nice looking case than the hp case so swapped most things over.
4. didnt take notice at first that the hp board required a gpu for visual, so thought id try my 210 again as i lightened the load of what was connected in the hp case so less power usage.
5. nothing wrong with hp internals, probably as stated likely too old for the 210.
6. SFF case i mentioned in another thread is up and running(just is issues now), the enlight supply seemed to be working now, 210 seems fine in it, no where near as good as the acer veriton but the acer is all original so will sell well.

not all the computers ive had have been utter crap, i just needed the money so i sold them as they were my most valuable and you be surprised what people still buy, the key people seem to want is decent amount of ram, biggish hdd, decent gpu and windows 7..

i dont really take notice of aero, but my dell latitude d600 with ati 9000 graphics runs 32 bit pro well(im using it now) and accepts the pictures and slideshow from the aero themed selection so who knows, but the x300se 128mb didnt cause any issues when i loaded 32 bit pro on the hp..

oh and as for the 210 i knew it wasnt the best(brought it brand new) but it runs my 1080p files on xbmc better and smoother than onboard and much better than amd e350 apu i had which was choppy as hell and thats all i wanted it for.

got a 9800gt but no psu good enough to test it lol

I had a HP which turned out to have stupid upgrade limitations such as I could not use more than 4 gb's of ram on it, ie: 2x 2gb sticks. Go to the HP website and see if you can pull up the model specs and then you'll be able to get motherboard details and check everything you added is okay.

To be honest you would be better off posting in general hardware section, the graphics card bit of OC is full of knobs.
