Does a patrol car have to pull you over if speeding?

Not quite sure on this, i was doing 60 mph on a 60mph dual carriageway in the dark, car infront of me and car behind, all 3 of us in the left lane. As the carrigeway approaches a left corner it changes to 40mph before going into a national speed limit. As i go this way every day im used to the corner and you can go round it well over 40 if you take a good line (its 2 lanes, no traffic coming from the other direction). Anyways, the car infront doesnt slow down and neither do I we both take it nicely at 60 mph.

I notice the car behind me has slowed a fair bit for the 40mph section then came flying up behind me on the 70mph section....they sat right on my bumper for about 1 mile (unlit section, all i could see was headlights in my mirror) i was almost tempted to push away then they eventually slowly overtook me and it was a fully decalled traffic cop in a BMW X5. Ouch... glad i didnt push the car. But now im wondering they witnessed me break a speed limit by 20mph - do they have to pull you over to issue a nip or can you be sent one in the post in these circumstances?

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, unlike fixed and mobile cameras, polive officers must stop and issue you the ticket at the time of the offence.

I am off the same believe too, otherwise they'd never pull anyone and just issue a ticket through the post.

I believe its because they need to ID the driver or something along those lines.

Plus lets face it most cops aint gonna be bothered about you breaking the speed limit on a dual carriage way if you were driving safely and in control.

usually they push you so that you speed ahead (maybe race them)

this way you would definately get fined

unmarked police officers do this a lot around our area (some in subarus)

They are NOT required to pull you at the time. If they have sufficient evidence for court (e.g. a video) then they can contact you later with an NIP, or even pay a visit if it was severe enough. This is why, even if you get away from them, they'll come and knock on your door later.

But...

it's just so much easier for them to pull you at the time, that they will usually do so. If the traffic car sped off, then they had decided that you weren't worth it, or they got a more serious shout (the latter judging by the way they sped up)

As for this nonsense:

why does this only seem to happen to the same people? To miss-quote the old saying: the only thing these incidents have in common is you. As i have pointed out before, the police car will approach fairly close so that a) they can read the reg (that means surprisingly close at night), and b) see the driver and/or passengers. If it looks suspicious, they'll PNC it. Nowadays they'll be ANPRing as well. Both take time. When they have the info they want, they either stop the car, or drop back. If at any point during the checks you set off, guess what: they'll be after you because now you're acting suspiciously. Given the number number of major busts that they get as a result of traffic stops, it's perfectly sensible.

Drive sensibly and wait for them to drop back, and stop driving like a ****.
