Does a retailer have to pay the return postage if an item is faulty?

I returned a defective item to Amazon and because Amazon would only let me have a Royal Mail label, I had to pay a courier to pick it up.

Am I right in saying that because the item was/is defective, Amazon have to refund the fees I paid to return it to them?

Edit: I've already returned the item.

It was more of a why didn't you just return it via royal mail?

But they'll refund up to a certain amount

This guy on the sauce? I read this as he wasnt happy with the RM label (which would be free, but he would have to go to the post office) and instead opted to pay for some guy to actually turn up to his house to collect....Yeah Amazon are not going to pay for that!

If a Royal Mail label is not suitable for any reason you can call/live chat/email them and they will offer an alternative i.e. courier, collect plus etc.

If you have just gone ahead and returned you may struggle to get anything back from them.

I think their collect+ option is great. Just drop it off to my local corner shop on the way to work.

Fantastic service.
