I have a router that has 5 computers running and apparently I suppose to have a 20meg line, but I don't think I get more than 7meg of internet through.

Does a router make any difference?

As far as stability goes, definitely. Although it's usually more to do with the modem within the device keeping sync'd with the exchange than the actual router part of it.

As far as your speeds go, it shouldn't vary wildly across brands but better spec'd devices may have slightly better throughput and lower latency. Which ISP is this?

So I need to invest in a good MODEM then and not blame XLN for there sides of things

No, a better modem may or may not make a small difference to speed the main advantage if any is in stability but I'd check your synch times to see if it is worth changing out the router.

Quality of line and distance from the exchange have a far larger bearing on the speed and stability of your internet connection. A good modem may give you a few hundred kbps or so extra in sync speed and may keep your connection alive more consistently but it won't likely be a night and day difference, well not unless your current equipment really sucks.

Post your connection stats, such as Attenuation and SNR as reported in your router's interface.

Billion 7800 - Best ADSL modem I've ever had.

Now use it with a wireless broadband service, through the EWAN connection. Excellent.
