Does a router only last about 7 months?

I've had a few routers die over the years, Belkin and 2Wire brands that I can recall, think my old original Speedtouch USB modem went too. Got a Cisco 1701 on the way that i'm looking forward to playing with.
 
The broadcom based routers that Be dish out do tend to go bad after a while because of overheated capacitors. A common problem is packet loss on the ethernet ports.

interesting! i'm with BE and using one of their routers and the thing gets seriously hot most of the time and ethernet ports cut out regularly... think I might look into getting a better replacement. any suggestions?
 
Routers are hot because they are passively cooled nearly always, they dont need the air, likewise they dont need to be cool, they should last indefinitely if they aren't moved or disturbed or worse held in a hotpress :) , bumming out after 9 months is a sign of a fault or harsh handling.
 
Unless theres an electrical storm a router should last forever, telephone wires are not insulated. Nothing in there is under stress and most people leave them on, start up is where most wear occurs in a computer

More damage would occur where temperate varies a lot maybe if your house is not insulated well and the router gets to zero when the house is empty then 50c because you put the router next to the radiator. I imagine it'd last about 2 years anyway. Ours is 7 years old
