does a WiFi card need to be plugged in via USB to work

i am trying to get better WiFi speeds on my computer so that i can download things faster and before i buy a WiFi card i need to know if i can use a high end WiFi card with 5 GHz support and high download speed without plugging it in via USB because i have no USB ports left on my motherboard and i am just trying to find out weather i can get max potential speeds without plugging it in to the motherboard

It depends what sort of card/adapter you buy. If you buy an internal card then no there's no need for it to go into a USB port. If you buy an external dongle then yes they'll normally go into USB

i want to buy an internal card

i was just wandering whether i needed to plug it into a USB on the motherboard so thank you for saying i do not that means i dont have to worry about it anymore thank you
 
I have a few different cards (gigabyte and asus) and the internal USB connector is usually optional, but the bluetooth doesn't work without it. Check the user reviews (usual places) before you buy and they should tell you.
 
Depending on your current wifi setup you might not actually see more speed in downloads etc.... so before you go any further it might be worth telling us what you have already because even 802.11n can max out an 80mbps internet connection on downloads (I max out my 80mbps with ease on 802.11n and it could likely do faster internet speeds too).

So what speed internet connection do you have and what is your current wireless setup (modem/router, current pc adapter speed etc).

You also have another option to usb or internal, the ethernet adapter (wireless bridge/client) such as a TP Link TL-WA801N. This is how I wirelessly connect my wired network to my router.
 
If you can possibly do it, a wired ethernet connection is just so much better.

WiFi is fine for phones etc, I guess it depends what you are doing on pc but stuff like gaming wired is better than any other solution.

I appreciate it isn't always possible.
