Does an HG612 BTO modem have to be unlocked to use with Sky fibre, or is the unlocking only for stat info? I intent to use my asus router with it. I have already installed the Merlin firmware and my sky user/password.

The default unlocked state of the Huawei HG612 will be to act as a bridge on LAN1. The Asus router will handle the Internet connection, which as long as it supports Sky's authentication method (DHCP option 61 I believe), you will have no issues.

In order to get stats off the modem you will need to connect an ethernet cable to LAN2 and give the PC connected a static IP of 192.168.1.x (x being anything except 1), with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1.

so I don't need to upload the unlocked firmware to it if i'm not bothered about stat monitoring? Also, would it be running a firewall by default? Should i leave the firewall enabled on the HG612 and turn it off on the asus?

That's good then, i'll just leave it locked. I'm sure I read somewhere that the HG612 had a firewall. I must be going mad lol

It may have one in theory, but if it does it isn't enabled by default. As there isn't an official way to access the modem settings there'd be no way to configure it.

oh of course....

I bought it second hand, should be here tomorrow so i'll put it back to default settings. i'm assuming I just hold the reset button in, then power up and wait 10 seconds or so to reset to defaults?
