Is it necessary?
Can the SSD just be rested on the based of the desktop or existing mechanical hard drive cage? Are there any disadvantages to this?
cheers :)

I wouldn't leave it "flapping about" inside the system, as it may move and short something out.

Cables ties can come in handy. ;)

I think I read that some people use velcro to keep it in place?
reason I ask is that my SSD failed recently.
I had it resting on the bottom of my case, and wonder if somehow that may have been the cause?

if you use bluetack or velcro just be aware not to put it on the drive label as when you take it off it will rip the label and invalidate the warranty as i found out

will I be constricted to SATA 2 by my setup - can anyone confirm?
can I still use my old SATA 2 cables with this SSD or do I need to buy new SATA 3 cables?

Nope, had mine resting on top of something else in my case for ages. It's not going to move around unless someone shakes it so no harm is going to come to it.
