well its on this Inspiron 2600 that a friend has given to me to look at,

the problem being that when you change a setting in windows the setting is not

being remembered e.g "show hidden folders" resorts straight back to "do not

show" when you go back in to it. also it wont let you open the recycle bin at all.

I thought it might be the m/board battery but the clock keeps its time ok. any

clues would be appreciated.

Not helpfull, but regarding the thread title:

"I remember with a heavy heart and a tear in my eye"

i didn't like it, there was nothing special about it. now when XP came out i thought it was class but not windows 2000

I was so determined to use windows 2000 at home. We were using at work, but I wanted to run it at home. By the time I had upgrade my machine to be able to run Windows 2000. XP had arrived. Needless to say, I never really got the chance to own a copy (except the trial)

It's not the battery, that just keeps the BIOS settings intact, what your seeing are problems within Windows, and specifically the registry.

Is the logon your using limited in any way? Have you tried the Administrator account?

He's got a point, this sounds like a registry restriction of some sort, but strange, as I'm sure you would have seen a hive key error at some point.

Scort.
