If so, how much data does it use up for you? I am with vodafone and I am currently on a 1Gb data plan, however I do use my phone a lot and would like to start streaming music from spotify from time to time so wondering on if I should upgrade to a higher package and get unlimited data.

Thanks guys

Surely, your phone has a usage statistics built into it? Most modern phones do as far as I can tell. My iPhone certainly does.

Settings > General > Usage > Cellular Usage

Reset it on the day your allowances renew, and you're sorted. No doubt theres some apps that can do this too.

I use Spotify on my mobile but don't use 3G. I just make whatever playlists I want offline which downloads them to the phone.

We use the Ogg Vorbis format for streaming. There are three quality ratings that we use:

q3 (~96 kbps)
Spotify mobile "Low bandwidth" setting
q5 (~160 kbps)
Spotify Desktop standard streaming quality
Spotify Mobile "High quality" setting
q9 (~320 kbps)
Spotify Desktop "High bitrate" setting available with Spotify Premium
Spotify Mobile "Extreme quality" setting (currently only iOS and Android)

In the mobile apps, you can choose separate quality ratings for streaming and synching.

just work it out:

96kbps x 3600 seconds in an hour = 345600
that's bits so divide by 8 to get KB = 43200
43.2MB an hour.

You can easily run up several hundred megs a month with highest quality audio. I'm on a Three all you can eat plan though, so haven't looked too closely.

I used to use it over 3g on long car journeys. You can chew through data pretty quickly. Roughly 4mb a song is a good estimate depending on what setting you used.

I think the bigger issue will be maintaining a good enough signal for 3g streaming. I like to use Google navigation but Vodafone is terrible for a constant signal.

I use Spotify on my phone predominantly with offline playlists, I live quite rurally so using 3g exclusively isn't really an option for me. What I've started doing is making a playlist each month, that way they don't get too bloated but they have enough songs on for long journeys.

I find it's much less hassle than manually than syncing with iTunes as the Spotify process is so streamlined. I usually add the songs to a playlist on my computer, open Spotify on my phone then selecting offline playlists.
