Does anyone have the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones?

Hi, does anyone have the above headphones? I was wondering, is it possible to use the noise cancelling function when you are not listening to music/podcasts/etc? Is it possible to switch off the "Auto-off" function? Can you use noise cancelling (without listening to anything) whilst connected to a device via bluetooth, or do you have to have the cable plugged in to be able to use the noise cancelling (without listening to anything)?

Thanks.

yes it’s possible, you can switch off the auto off feature in the mobile app.

Thanks, do you have the XM4s? I read on the website that you could do this for the XM3s, but I didn't see anywhere which said you could do it for the XM4s. Can you use the noise cancelling without listening to anything when connected via Bluetooth?

I had the XM4s for over a year and did this while I worked from home (living on a main road) so 100% certain.

Great headphones btw only reason I don’t have them now is because I got a cheap pair of XM5s

Thanks for confirming. I also want them for work and don't want to listen to music or anything, just want to block out external noise and it would be pretty bad to be only able to use the NC if you are connected via cable.

When I asked Sony they said they had to be connected via the cable to be able to use noise cancelling, which seemed bizarre given how popular listening via Bluetooth seems to be now.

Yes, I travel a lot for work and just wear them for the whole flight whilst rarely listening to music. I have both the in ears and over ears and can do the same on both sets.

Now I'm really confused, I just got the following message from Sony customer services.. This is for the over ear XM4s:

"Unfortunately the NC function can only be used with a Bluetooth connection if you are listening to music. But to use it alone, a cable connection is mandatory. The Bluetooth connection causes the Auto Power Mode to get activated if no music is playing for five minutes, which makes is impossible to use the NC function on its own without music with the Bluetooth connection. It's the cable connection only that will keep the Auto Power Mode off, so you can use the NC without music. https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/...tooth-headphones/wh-1000xm4/articles/00175281"

Were you able to switch off the Auto power off mode on the over-ear ones in the app? And it definitely is possible to use the NC (for more than 5 mins) without listening to anything when connected to BT?

I think they mean to say auto off remains active if not connected to a device.

If you stay connected to a device and just not play music or media then it will be fine. That’s what I’ve been doing.

Customer service certainly seem wrong here. I've got my headphones on now with Bluetooth to phone but nothing on/playing. They have not switched off after five minutes.

They will if I take them off my head and place them down though as that is what the auto power off function does.

Auto power off in the app is able to be switched off but that is for if you want them to remain active even when you take them off unless you press the power off button.

Edit:
Having just tested if you turn off the auto power off in app you actually can just have the headphones on with NC without even being connected to anything via BT or needing to have it cabled. Just remember to switch the headphones off when you not wearing them or you'll run out of battery quicker than you think.

So the XM4s do the same as the article says for the XM3s.

Oh wow, that is really helpful, thanks for testing that! My ideal situation would be to be able to turn off "Auto off" completely, not listen to anything, and still be able to use NC without connecting via BT/cable, so I really appreciate you taking the time to confirm it. (I assume you are using the over-ear ones and not the in-ear ones). It seems quite strange that the customer service people are saying one thing, but the actual user experience is the complete opposite of what they are saying...

No problem at all and yeah the big cans, not the in-ear ones. Indeed odd but yeah was all good when tested for exactly what you want. Should also mean a little more battery not needing to be connected via BT constantly.
