Does anyone here still use a single core pc?

Got my P4 fully working now and is playing WoW on Low at around 70 fps max... 30 ish during HC's.... it's surprisingly good :P OC'd to 3.2 atm.

Got one of these with a Pentium 4 3ghz with HT, 2.5GB of DDR2, Nvidia 7600 Zalman and a 1TB HD as a home media server, runs 24/7 and has done since 2004

P4 in a media server that's on 24/7? Not really ideal is it, P4s are power-hungry mofos.

ello, pentium m 1.6 here, overclocked to 2.1 for 5 years...AGP, all the trimmings :)

but just been trying to catch up again and wow..these new intel ones look amazing!

Serious question: how much quicker would say a i5 2400 be at something like movie encoding than my current setup? thanks

Using cpubenchmark.net (just cos I can't think of any others that have very old & new chips compared):

Pentium M @ 1.6 GHz = 404; Pentium M @ 2.1 GHz = 530
Core i7-2600K @ 3.4 GHz = 8658; Core i7-2600K @ 4.6 GHz = 11713

11713/530 = 22.1. So I'd say you're looking at ~20 times faster than your current chip using something like X264.

Wow. Thanks. Might finally be time for me to upgrade then :)

I imagine some of these could run BF2 at 1920x1080 with the integrated graphics. Only decent game my current machine can run.

Perhaps but there's no motherboard that supports both overclocking and IGPs until the Z68 chipset comes out in a few months.

Yep. Still got a couple of P4 machines for a couple of things, mainly for testing stuff and some older games.

My original P4 rig from 2001 is still ticking away just fine (once the motherboard caps were replaced a few years back). It's on about it's 4th different graphics card and maxxed out with a 2.6GHz CPU. Also got a P4-530 IBM SFF which was running 2003 Server until I virtualised it onto the Mac mini to keep the power usage down.

ive just this week built a new dual core Atom D525 system, been using a Dell Optiplex SX270 sff for the last year with a Pentium 4 3.4GHz extreme edition, was still more than enough for the basic web stuff i use it for, just fancied something quieter and cooler running

my dads laptop single core.... for the past 4 years i bein telling him to upgrade but he wont! he comes in from work turns laptop on has a shower goes out for a fag makes a cup of tea. goes back to laptop waits for bout 2-3mins and then its ready for him..

im not joking either btw haha

Aaah, hadn't heard of that. Well, in the meantime I may just get an i5 2400k and one of these, and see how I get on

Trying to convince my Dad to upgrade from our Pentium 4 2.8ghz, 2GB RAM & Windows XP I think but he doesn't want to budge. Surprisingly the machine gets used almost every day for 4-6 hours for everything from office/internet browsing to ripping DVD's!! Surely an upgrade is due soon!

I don't.. but my grandparents have a pentium 1 133 mhz packard bell

New pc's these days last a couple of years before something goes wrong..

I'm very surprised that's still working - it's from around 1998. They were not the most reliable things when new!

Same here. He rocked a Prescott 3.0GHz for about 5 years, then decided he wanted Windows 7 about 6 months ago. I ordered him a Pentium Dual Core barebones, added some storage and he's very happy with it. Total outlay inc Windows 7 was well under £300. The case is a bit tinny, but who cares for that price.
