Does anyone know an easy way to convert an uncopyrighted NTSC DVD to PAL?

I thought about ripping each track to AVI then burning the files as PAL using Nero 7 but I think that's about 4 hours encoding each way.

Is there an easier way than this?

then dvd shrink to remake it (multiregion)freeware or nero recode

That'll remove the region protection, but will not convert the film from NTSC to PAL

For instance a

typical NTSC DVD 4:3 (1.33aspect has a resolution of 720 x 480)
typical PAL DVD 4:3 (1.33aspect has a resolution of 720 x 576)

Not only is there a resolution difference but also normally a framerate difference. You will need to use something like DGPulldown to achieve a proper conversion

you can find information here http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=4;41#4;41
or a doom9 http://www.doom9.org

This a total pain and as I was doing it for a mate and not myself I think I'm just gonna give him a few options on how to do it and leave him to it.

If anyone else is interested there is also a program called DVD2SVCD that can do it but you lose the menus due to the way it's done. Decent quality conversion though but it can take up to 16 hours.

It converts it to SVCD format, which is still pretty good quality, but will not play in a lot of DVD players. Why does he need the conversion to PAL anyhow? Most NTSC discs will play just fine on any modern (last 5 years) tv set.

I think it's because the PAL aspect ratio is different to NTSC.
