Does anyone ride a unicycle?

After a bit of practice they are not as hard as they look and he should progress. I would make sur you get one from a proper shop and take advice from them. We have a kite shop that sells good quality circus type stuff - juggling, diabalos, unicycles etc. Don't just get one on the internet without checking it out a bit.

Make sure you get one with 1 wheel or it will be a bike.

I've tried a unicycle once or twice and it's pretty hard to do but with a bit of perserverance and a passable sense of balance your son should manage it. One of my mates had one and the comments from passersbye ranged from the moronic to the quite frankly inspired - I think my favourite has to be from a couple of lassies who said "why are you riding a tricycle mister?". I had no words then to cover that then and I still can't think of a decent reply now, so close and yet so far away...

all i remember about unicycles at school was that one lad had one and that he was a weirdo . he also had a bouncy castle at his 16th bday and collected toenail clippings

Like a bicycle, the first thing to master is balance. It's done through rocking back and forward to achieve some momentum and make your centre of balance more stable than sitting on one point.

Once you've got to be able to rock back and forth and balance on the spot for 30 seconds or so, then you can try going forward a couple of turns before rocking back and forth again to balance on the spot. Shift weight and pedal down one foot to turn on the spot.

Best have one or two mates on hand to act as stabilisers at first :p
