Just been recomended a tool called Sandboxie.

You use it for running any software you suspect might malicious

Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

I'm just wondering if anyone here can recommend it as something worth using?

I've thought about it, but then I can get rid of anything I get so I don't really mind.

Added to that I don't really have anything suspicious to run.

Can recommend it as long as you are not on 64-bit as it links in pretty low to capture everything.

I think a full back-up/Virtual Machines are a safer bet, though

Never used Sandboxie - I normally run anything like that in a Virtual Box VM.
Nice and easy to set up and run, even on my laptop.

if you want to test dodgy things, tbh though just buy software instead to keep it going..

virtualbox

xp / 2000

My defence against potentially malacious software

runas <-

I create a new user on my machine called dummy , i remove it from group users
and add it to guests only.

If I download something dodgy I then right click on it and use runas
I run it as the dummy user , if it is a keygen ( ligit) then it will run and I can generate a key
If it is a trojan / virus it will try to write to somewhere where it aint allowed to and windows will stomp on it.

Its not only downloading dodgy stuff though - if I download freeware / shareware I always try the VM first to make sure it doesn't do anything strange.

I haven’t used Sandboxie, but I do have Defence Wall on the our XP Laptop and it works a treat. Any malware etc is locked down and useless and from what I can gather it runs very similar to DW, seems to be well regarded on Wilders. DW is very easy to use, cant comment on Sanboxie.

These type of apps are normally very secure, but it really depends on your pc/laptop usage and who uses it, if you’re a careful user there isn’t much need to sand box your internet facing app’s, but if you have kids or multiple users etc then it may be very useful.

May worth trying Sandboxie or Defence Wall to see what you prefer.

Since sandboxie is 32bit only i'll have to give it a miss.

I'd be interested to hear what other virtual machine type software people use though. So long as its 64bit compatible :)

Do VM programs require you to have 2 physical hard drives though as i only have the one.
