Does anyone work for IBM?

VW Polo or maybe a low end golf. or equivalent.

My last car scheme was about £3800 and that was a 1.9Tdi golf. Not through IBM but cant see them being much different.

depends how many years you take it for

No it doesnt, it sounds like the company has a car scheme. Therefore they chose and simply offer you a list of cars from which to pick.

He isnt going to be arranging his own lease unless he opts out of the scheme.

The main IBM scheme does give you a list to choose from although there's very little limitation - anything from a 1.0D Pacific rim shopping mobile to a 911 (if you want to fork out £1500 a month!). Terms are 24, 36 or 48 months, the longer the lease the lower the cost (generally).

The figure seems a bit low for the main scheme so I'm guessing it's either the Essential Car User scheme or more likely the Market Scheme. If it's the latter then you should have access to the full list from the lease companies, £250 a month is 1.4 Polo or Civic territory.

Thanks. How about on the Essential User Scheme? Are prices different or just choice? Do you have any idea on prices for BMW 3-series / Audi A4?

In organisations like this you generally wont be driving around in an Audi A4 or a BMW 3 Series unless you are on some sort of management grade.

The car schemes are changing at the moment and I'm not 100% sure what's happening to the ECU. Let me have a scout about and see what I can find.

Yeah, you'd need to be in the Executive Scheme (although that covers us senior techies as well) to get a decent enough allowance for an A4 or a 3 series. That said leasing a 320D is less than a 1.6 Focus at the moment!

OK, looks like the ECU is more limited and you need to be aware that if you don't do 7000 business miles a year the benefit will be removed. You've got 2 options

1) Accepting an allocated ECU car which could be a reallocation (from someone who's left or retired mid lease) or a new low CO2 vehicle. If the ECU benefit is removed the car goes back.

2) Take a new salary sacrifice car which is limited to a £25K list price and 140 CO2s. This is a fixed term lease paid for out of the ECU allowance however if you lose the ECU benefit you lose the money but have to keep paying for the car for the rest of the lease.

There is no hidden option number 3. If you don't take a car you don't get the money.

Thanks rpstewart. I'm not sure which scheme this role would fall into, but it's consultancy so I'd classify a car as an essential personally. A 320d efficient dynamics would be nice :)
