I am looking to help out a friend by creating essentially an online newspaper. This is for non-publication purposes and will be held on a school intranet. Ideally, users would be able to be access-controlled via LDAP/AD.

Each user should only be able to edit their own work too.

Does anything exist that is exactly or similar to this?

Wordpress with an LDAP plugin might be something to look at.

Sharepoint will do this, but costs £££. Best bet is to have your friend speak with the school's IT department, since the intranet may already running on a platform which supports this.

SharePoint won't allow a journalistic interface though.

The school doesn't have the justification nor financial support for enterprise level software like SharePoint as far as I've been told (I did suggest that first of all).

Sounds like you've described pretty every CMS out there tbh. I don't see what the "catch" is?
