Does CPU fan need power connector?

I've just replaced the Tuniq standard fan with a Scythe S-Flex. Does it need to be connected to a 4-pin molex connector? The Tuniq fan wasn't and didn't have the option, but the Scythe has the connector. Shoud I connect it, or does it make no difference?

What is the point of the 4-pin molex connector generally then? Should any fan that has a 3-pin connector just go straight into an available 'aux fan' motherboard connection without the need for the molex connection? Is it an either/or situation rather than a need for both? I wondered if it affected the fan speed or something.

Some people will want to use the fan as a case fan or something else so it is an option to either use the 3 pin on the mobo or a 4pin molex. Doesn't really matter. Just with the 3pin it can sometimes be monitored by software.

You use 1 of the 2, either 3 pin or molex.

Some mobos have lots of 3 pin connectors & some only have 1 or 2.
the length of wires is a big factor, you may not be able to reach the mobo 3 pin connector therefore you use the molex.

Check the fan does not draw more power then the motherboard can supply or you will burn out the fan header. Molex is generally designed for more powerfull fans
