Does defragging affect JPEG's?

Hello all,

As the title suggests I was wondering if this is the case. As I understand it, everytime one opens and closes a .jpg you lose a little resolution as the file decompresses and then recompresses. Is this correct or does it only happen whenever you make a change and save the .jpg?

Either way, can I assume that merely copying the file up and down whilst the HDD is being defragged should NOT affect the .jpg?

Many thanks

NB

Defragmentation shouldn't change the file contents at all. You only lose resolution/detail/data if you open the JPEG in an image editor and choose to recompress as a JPEG. Viewing it doesn't write anything to the file.

if a file is fragmented, that means the actual file is spread across different parts of the disk, rather than in the same area of the disk.

All defragging does is re order files physical location on the platter so they are next to each other for faster access.

You dont loose resolution, thats just bull.

Defragging doesn't change anything, it just moves pieces of a file around to improve HDD performance (reduces seek time, mainly). If anything was altered during the process your OS would self-destruct.

As for JPEGs, only if you repeatedly open and then re-save a file using JPEG format will you see image degradation. Simply viewing it makes no changes, as with any other file type.
