looking at getting a 1080 and the gigabyte GI seems to have only one HDMI

Now i dont want to upgrade my amp/receiver for 4K so my plan was run the video signal from the HDMI direct to my 4K tv and then run a second HDMI / display port adapter to my amp so i can get the audio sent to my amp.

is this possible or do i need a 1080 card with 2 HDMI outputs.

i dont know whether it even possible to split video and audio through 2 separate outputs

Yes it certainly does.

Annoyingly the Receiver will show up as an extra screen though, which can occasionally cause issues if Windows decides to open a program on that 'screen'

I think my set up is the same as what your trying to do. I have HDMI going into my receiver outputting to my tv and my monitor connected straight to the card via DP.

I select the TV as the output device in the sound manager and this gives me sound for the whole system, doesnt matter which screen I have programs/games on etc

EDIT: Ignore, misread your post.

can anyone suggest which adaptor i need. does the fact that the gpu i am using the 1080 have any bearing on the adaptor i need. and does the adaptor need to be hdmi 2.0 as i only want it to carry sound

when you say it will show up as an extra screen - What do you mean?
Basically the receiver would be "recognised" as a extra display as well, and you couldn't see anything without having it hooked up to another monitor or TV...and something is there are programs opened up on that "display", you'd have to navigate blind to try to drag the opened windows from that display back to your actual monitor.

It's caused a hell of a problem for me as well, as my receiver is old and it is only capable of passing video signal of up to 720p, so with my PC hooked up to monitor, TV and the receiver, the icons of the main desktop could fly over to the 3rd display (the receiver) that I can't. I gave up, and stick with using spdif to connect my PC to receiver for audio, as it was too much of a hassle using HDMI which make the receiver turn into extra display that I cannot see.
