If I've got some videos in Xvid format, would something that is DivX compatible be able to play them?

I've always sort of thought the two went hand in hand?

It's a derivative of DivX, but the player must have specific support for it. 99% (probably 100% even :p ) of players support it now though anyway.

Many DVD players aren't Divx licensed due to costs, so they also just say Mpeg-IV player, which means Divx and Xvid. afaik Xvid is basically the same as Divx, it's just a freeware version of the codec.

Some players dont like it if the bitstream ispacke and it runs jerky picture wise. If so just use mpeg4 modifier to sort it (free prog...google it). Takes couple of mins to sort

In theory yes, in reality not always.
I have had a couple of Yamada Divx capable players that wouldn't play certain Xvid films.

Bear in mind that the resolution of some xvid/divx files are larger than most DVD players can handle.

My DVD Player will happily play most XVid material I dowload and put on DVDRWs. It's a Philips DVP630 which is listed as supporting DivX... Yes some will not, especially high res ones. But most are fine!

Now I'm looking at replaced this unit with a DVD player / Hard Drive recorder I want to try and ensure I can still play all media I currently can!

Can you help out of interest? http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17656133

I got rid of my Mpeg-IV player for a HTPC, the DVD player did play most but not all. Ogg/OGM, subtitles under AVI's, jerking, audio/video out of sync, and HD incompatibility. It was annoying connecting up and transferring the files that wouldn't play onto the laptop, then setting it up, enable S-Video out, set TV out as primary, connecting optical USB dongle, using keyboard/mouse WMP etc. So take 30 minutes compared to 10 seconds on the new HTPC.
