Does DLC lead to piracy?

I don't believe so - IMO anyone that chooses to pirate a game based on the DLC factor likely has a high propensity to pirate anyway.

It might discourage gamers from buying a particular game (or games from a given publisher as alluded to by Rroff) but I don't think it is converting huge number of people into pirates.

This. I don't actually think about pirating a game with overpriced DLC likely to come out for it, but equally I either won't buy the game, or just won't buy the DLC when it comes out. Ie Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Bought the game in the end, but didn't want the map packs.

This to be honest. It will either put me off buying the game or will put me off buying the DLC.

I do think though it is another excuse that the pirates will use when in reality they just had no intention of paying for the product anyway.

DLC is not a reason to pirate, and the OP sounds to me that he is trying to justify his actions by nitpicking DLC.
i dont pirate games! ive just seen a lot of comments recently from people saying they wouldnt buy it but they would get it regarding dlc and pre order exclusives.

they are obviously going to get it frrom places that have the full games aswell some might see the full games and realise how easy it is to pirate them.

i mainly play online games and mmo's you cant pirate them , single player games dont hold much intrest for me anymore unless its something amazing which is worth buying anyway

its more likly the other way round.

piracy leads to DLC's

the publishers try to get back some of the money lost to pirates by getting more out of the honest customers who pay.

Would be interesting to see where those stats come from, 6% of every DLC could still be quite a lot if it includes all the random guff that gets churned out these days like liveries, skins, weapons etc.

I reckon if it was limited to 'proper' DLC like expansions (Fallout 3 etc) the proportion might be a bit higher, although of course it is difficult to know where to draw the line.

its from an NPD study over a 3month period maybe which might not be entirelt accurate depending on what dlc was released during those 3 months.
According to a survey by the industry research group spanning three months, 75 percent of consumers 13 and older did not download digital content on any platform at all. Some 15 percent downloaded content via a PC or Mac, 4 percent through a smartphone, and 2 percent connected via a Blu-ray Disc player or a digital video player, such as Apple TV or Roku. (The sample size of the study was not provided.)

The remaining 6 percent downloaded content via a connected "game player," a category that covers the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. Russ Crupnick, NPD's vice president and senior entertainment analyst, put a positive spin on the relatively low number.

"The promise of the connected experience is coming, as prospective Blu-ray owners want their players to come with connectivity, and half of game consoles are already connected," he said in a statement. "The doors are also opening wider for music, video, gaming and other forms of entertainment."

Anita Frazier, NPD's top analyst for toys and video games, elaborated on the gaming aspect of the study. She said that, thanks to online connectivity, the demographic of what is considered a "gamer" is broadening.

"Today's gamer might be a hardcore teenager playing games online with his friends, a 40-something female playing Farmville on Facebook, or everything on either side of that spectrum," Frazier said. "We would not have seen this type of audience diversification and expansion if it weren't for connected Internet, smartphone, and online gaming options."

i supose 13 years and older kinda rules out 90% of console derps though ^_^

Those statistics don't make sense. What games does this cover? 13 years and older is probably meaningless as no doubt 99.99% of people asked if they are over 13 will say yes even if they aren't because its less hastle. I highly doubt they are accurate at any rate. 6%... why would companies be rushing to release them if barely anyone was buying it?

^Interesting point there regarding waiting for a GOTY edition or similar, I think that is fast becoming the way to go (don't buy games on release, wait 9 months or so and get it with all the DLC, fully patched and at a reduced price - Fallout 3 being a great example).
I did this with F03. Hell, I think you're a nutter if you pay out for all DLC. Unfortunately these days DLC seems to mean "oh we'll put off doing a proper expansion until weve extracted every last penny".

I stopped preordering when I got stung by some DRM schemes that were disclosed after the game had shipped!

Now I wait until a game has been out for a few days and check what the users are saying about it before I buy. I've skipped some otherwise promising games that way, and it's saved me from buying some turkeys.

Since we all agree that buying DLC on release is silly, maybe todays a good day to buy some, MW2 packs are half price on steam, £11 each was too much, but £11 for the pair's not so bad.

DLC from publishers is mostly a joke, although i can deal with expansions (ie Company of Heroes opposing Fronts etc...) with at least a semblance of content. i much rather get DLC from the community, ie maps, mods etc.. usually far better choice anyway.

nowadays i don't even bother with a game unless it has community behind it. sorry but paying 10 quid for 5 multiplayer maps is a taking the p***. in my case it doesn't make me want to pirate but just simply avoid those games, and i don't even bother or want that DLC - really don't feel like I am missing out tbh.
