Does driving a certain make/type of car, make you think you own the road ?

Howdy !!

just wondered what everyones take on this was, because i was talking to a friend last night about it, and basically BMW drivers really hack me off :)

you could be sitting in the fast lane of the motorway going plenty fast (and lets face it, no-one sticks to 70 in the fast lane) and they come screaming up behind you, flashing their lights, to get you to move over, its like they think having a nice car, gives them ownership of the road (personally i dont think there is anything much about Beemers that is prestigeous, sure they are very well built cars, but are now 10 a penny on the road)

in general it seems to be any good german car, although Audi owners seem to be a bit more conservative, and even mroe so with Mercedes drivers. its like the BMW is the "chav" of the german luxury car ...

so basically, what i am asking is, does having a car with a good badge, or a bit of poke, turn you into a prat ?

i know this is me generalising (dons his flame proof suit) :)

Interestingly, I find that normally it's the Audi drivers who are now the worst. Almost as though the real plebs who've recently changed to an A4/A6 now think that they have to prove just how big a plonker they are.

thank god, its not just me !!

:)

And to finish the set off I find Merc drivers the worst. Like they think they have a nice car or something.

so basically, all the german cars?

i dont think i have ever seena BMW in the slow lane of the motorway, i quite regularly watch them pull on to the motorway, and goes across both lanes, into the fast lane, then hyperdrive ....

Mercedes saloons i tend to find more conservative ... but Merc sports coupes etc. are among the worse offenders

For me it's the 4x4's down country lanes.

i hear you, but really thats their domain ...

its got to be BMW on the motorway though .... FLASH FLASH, get out the way, i am driving a BMW and i think i am kewl, and i am gonna intimidate everyone on the road, however fast your going ... its not fast enough .... blah blah blah ....

I wouldn't go as far to say that all Mercedes drivers are like that (My dad for example who is a very courteous driver and normally stays in the middle lane of the motorway apart from overtaking etc) but there is a few round here who don't seem to share that mentality. To be honest though i find clio/ fiesta etc banga drivers to be more hassle especially when they don't have the power to overtake but think they're flying a rocket ship:(:p

bet your dad drives a merc saloon that glides along ... kewl

i was really meaning BMW drivers who jsut stay in the fast lane, and flash everyone to get out of the way regardless

Okay I own a BMW but don't think I own the road, but it is annoying when you are progressing along a motorway, moving out into the outer lanes to overtake other cars to get stuck behind some numpty that's just sitting in either the middle/outer lane without anything in front/besides of him.

If you aren't overtaking or stuck behind other traffic get the hell over if the road ahead is clear and have someone behind you that's travelling faster!

my point exactly .... isnt 80 or 85 not fast enough for you already? you are aware that anything over 70 is breaking the law right?

:)

The point of the Right hand lane is to overtake though. Not to sit there doing 80.

your still missing the point .... when have you ever had a beemer move over for you in the fast lane, or move over after they shot past you?

never

because it doesnt happen.

No it's not. What right do you have to try and dictate to me my speed?

It's not BMW drivers (or any other marques drivers for that matter) that are prats, it's the people like you that sit in the overtaking lanes when you aren't overtaking. Learn to drive, and move over.

i would never try to dictate anyones speed to them ....

i would like to think however that the law, common sense, and a healthy respect for the saftey of other road users would.

.

No, what that is is you being sat in the fast lane in your slow car holding them up, i get annoyed when im doing some speed and somthing is just "sat" as you say you are in the overtaking lane. Any driver, whether he's driving a BMW or not, is guna do the same thing.

take it from me fella ...

my 300ZX 3Ltr twin turbo isnt slow ..... :)

and the car usually "sat" in the lane is a BMW

I think that those things would keep you out of the right hand lane (there is no slow or fast lane) if you're going slower than the other traffic. The moral high ground is neither here nor there.

so by definition, what you are saying is ... if you drive in the fast lane, you have no respect for the law, no common sense, or no respect for other road users?

Trojan said:
If you're bothered about the law, why are you doing 80/85mph then?

when did i ever say i was doing 80/85? i asked if it was fast enough, but not once have i stated thats the speed i was travelling

Trojan said:
So why do you sit in the overtaking lane stopping people from going quicker than yourself?

i dont. and i have made that perfectly clear. the point i was making is when drivers get impatient, and just flash you out of the way or intimidate you by driving right up your chuff, even though they can see there is nowhere to pull over to, or that a gap to pull over is some way ahead, especially in busy traffic. This thread was never about driving, more about attitudes and behaviour

Trojan said:
How is my wanting to drive faster than the idiot sat in the overtaking lane a lack of common sense, provided the conditions are good for it?

Whilst we're on the subject as well, how about using your common sense and not getting in the way of faster moving vehicles?

your first sentence in this statement completely vindicates the reason for this thread, and your second just confirms the attitude of a bully with pokey motor.

Trojan said:
Myself doing 90mph+ has no effect on other road users, as long as I do so only when the conditions allow. Rainy weather during rush hour? No chance. Dry, clear weather on an evening? Not a problem at all.

of course it has a bearing on other road users. it doesnt matter about the conditions, but your stopping distance at 90+ is gonna be a helluva lot longer than at 70 or even 80, and that could make the difference between life or death to yourself or others.

But Trojan, let me show that i can bend the knee and apologise to you. This was never meant to wind anyone up, it was only ever meant to be a topical discussion and its been that. it was never a criticism (i am in no position to citicise anyone) its just my opinion.

:)

your opinion was a critism of bmw drivers :p

and lets not go all 'THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!11 DONT SPEED!!11' as it holds no weight here :p

yes it was, or at least it started out as that, as it was jsut my opinon. but then others added theirs, and it grew to more than that

point taken though

;)
