Does dual channel make a big difference?

I have noticed in a few games that my rig is not performing as it should (random frame drops and the like). I suspect the ram is letting it down but im not 100% so I will list my specs and you guys can advise. I am very tight on cash ATM so no crazy suggestions please ☺.

Asus B85-plus
I5 4570 @3.2Ghz (3.6 turbo)
Strix GTX 970
12Gb Kingston 1333 (1 8gb + 1 4Gb)
240gb sandisk ssd

I did a quick comparison between dual channel 1600 and single 1333 and found 0 difference in a selection of games and benchmarks.

Have you tried removing the 4gb stick and see how it performs also have you got the 8gb stick in the primary slot mentioned in your motherboard manual ?
