Does dual core need win xp pro to get best from it?

Its DUAL CPUs that dont work with HOME, but DUAL-CORE are ok.

Thats the impression I have anyway.

AFAIK NT, 2K and XP PRo are fine, but XP Home is not.

I could give you the actual facts if you want... I have an x2 4400 and a P4 with HT and those are dual core, and pretend dual core ( hehe ) but also I got a 1.6Ghz dual CPU Intel PC that I am about to knock together and I will have a plonk with Home on that to find out... I need to try Home on the other 2 also just to find out.

IF I remember, or you remind me I will get back with the results yeah?

You shouldnt....

A program will either use the two cores, or it wont.

It should not affect it either way whether there is or isnt dual core / cpu as they are still 100% compatible with single, only there is two of them.

prehaps theres a difference in the way xp pro handles multiple cpus - hence the performance increase yur seeing
Yes running threads are load balanced over all available CPUs and their cores. Hence the performance increase in multi-tasking work loads...

Windows is more multithreaded than Linux can ever be...
Any evidence for this?

Anyway, all versions of XP will reap the same results from dual core however the home edition is limited to 1 cpu socket (dual core = 1 socket).

The main benefit you will see is when multitasking, you'll also load up a bit faster.
