Hi,

I just bought a 4890 and tried benchmarking it using 3d mark 2006
it says i cant run the programme because i'm using xp pro with it's DX9 built in
it says i must upgrade to vista for the thing to bench mark my system as presumably vista comes with DX10
I've tried for so long not to upgrade to vista does getting this graphics card mean i'm going to have to now ?

best regards
Ian

Hi,

thanks both of you
just one other thing will dx9 work the 4890 as hard as dx10 would or doesnt matter ?

best regards
Ian

There is a modded dx10 you can install on xp. Google it.

Are you sure these modded DirectX 10 works??? because ive heard there wont ever be a version of DirectX 10 for WindowsXP, and those so called modded releases only allows you to possibly try out some DirectX 10 demos, resources stuff but don`t actually allow you to select DirectX 10 mode in games on WindowsXP.

Hi,

I did download an upgrade dx10 programme which just seem to confuse issues
windows said it had dx10 but every other testing benchmark etc said i was stillrunning using dx9

so now not too sure what i have
good news however i downloaded a new copy of 3dmark06 and it seems to work fine apart from the results i got which are alarming

my total was 12,600 everything including my machine at default settings using q6600 so think thats not too bad ( waits for sudden rush of people telling me i should be getting closer to 20,000 )

I must say however i am a bit disapointed last time i run these tests couple of years ago on a 6800 256 meg card and got frame rates between 20 and 30 i seem to remember but this time that had only increased on this card using a quad core chip instead of a twin core 4800 to frame rates between 30 and 70 which is merely double and seems rather skimpy for all that power

the most worrying test was the one which i cant remember the name of but comes after the forest test and before the monster test
it seems to be a battle taking place in a desert and starts off with you panning back to see the whole panorama unfortunately the frame rate on this test never makes it above 2 :confused:

i cant see that it is actually supposed to be like that so anybody got any idea whats up ?

thanks for all your help guy's

Ian

Thats because this test is for the cpu only so all frames are being rendered by the cpu not the gpu

I think your score is very reasonable, i only ever got a max of about 1400 with a heavily oc'ed q6600 3.8 and an oc'd 8800GTX

Hi,

1400
I think you prob meant 14000 so makes me feel a bit better
still if that test is purely for the CPU speed I would have thought even 2 frames a min for a standard q6600 was a bit slow
i mean i know the old q6600 is not holding it's own much today with all the i7 chips etc but it cant be that slow surely ?

Don't stess, even the fastest dual socket 8 core systems aren't getting much more than 4 fps in that particular section of the benchmark - I'm guessing there's huge amounts of calculations going on behind the scenes, something I doubt you'll see in your average game.

No it does indeed allow you to play directx 10 games in xp. The better modded sites have a list of supported directx 10 games.

It does indeed not appear to work in every game but all the directx 10 for xp are all alpha and beta and are work in progress.

Hi,

Thanx titaniumx3 thats a load off my mind
does seem a rather silly test to run if not even the fastest cpu's can manage it

now may try some overclocking to see if I can get close to your 14000 ConTRo13R :D

best regards

Its not a "silly test" ... its intended to measure how fast the CPU is and to do this it runs one of the existing tests running all the graphics pipeline on the CPU (i.e. graphics card is being used purely as a frame buffer). As such it its probably a very good indication of processor performance is its not a trivial algorithm (like dhrystone or whetstone) and has the advantage that it gives some visual feedback of whats going on.

Also, it goes to show how powerful GPUs are today!

I would imagine these just work by hooking the calls and re-writing them to use DirectX 9 calls, as DirectX 10 is built on WDDM, and WDDM drivers aren't available on XP.

Hi deshepherd,

Now I'm really confused as the last processors I used on this test were AMD twin cores namely the 4400 and the 4800
and both of them got between 1 and 2 frames as well
so this means a quad core running at the same frequancy as the 4800 can only match it in performance ?
and the 4400 was 200 Mhz slower yet pretty much matched the 4800 and now it seems the q6600 isn't that mutch better maybe half a frame

most interesting and a bit disheartening

I wouldn't worry too much about that, compare the cpu scores not just the framerates.

And if half a frame might be a 50% improvement ;)

DX10 is only on Vista and above ((win 7)) and XP is DX9.
