thanks in advance guys

download OCCT and run the stress test for at least 30 mins - then post up a picture.

Your settings look fine at idle (would love to see temps), but thats not where things go wrong.

?????

for some strange reason andi RealTemp causes windows vista 64 to freeze up and become unstable i go shut down via task manager and it locks up on logging off???? what could be causing this?

when i click on the realtemp icon when i have unzipped the program it just does not open up and my windows freezes hmmm???

Good stuff - they look fine for idle temps.

Now run a stress test program like prime 95, orthos or OCCT and put the CPU under full load. Then take a snap of the temperatures at say..20 minutes.

ok stress test

i tested in Everest Ultimate Edition as it was the only one installed on the machine i removed Prime95 lol test was ran for 11min as i got bored... no lockups or BSOD occured...

...

in prime 95 in small and large FFTs my cpu was running hotter sometimes hit near the 90oc range... and blended mode 1 thread failed for some reason... but anyway the question was is the everest stress test stressful enough???

Wow, 90 degrees in prime 95, that is not good.

What is the cpu cooler you are using? Is it the titan fenrir or something else?

Also, how did you mount it?

Not particaularly familiar with the everest test (just used it before to get mobo temps), I generally go by prime 95 or occt stress testers. But in that picture it looks like the test is off, either you switched it off or it failed. To get an idea of temperatures in everest you will need to post a screenshot under full stress.

Anyway, at the moment the system does not sound too well. I recommend going into the BIOS - turn the VCORE down to 1.2Volts and the BCLK down to 170MHz and set the memory multiplier to 20 - should give you a much cooler overclock of 3.4Ghz. Do the stress test again and see what maximum temperatures you now get.

yes

i have the titan fenrir cooler and i have reseated it 3 times already and still same load temps i think its been machined wrong and the base is not flat im gonna buy a new cpu cooler maby by end of this week... and the test did run without errors i stopped it myslef after 11min and it records the peak average and min temps when the test was taking place like a screen shot... but im scared to run prime95 as my cpu temp stats to reach and even hit 90oc..

[edit] how good are Megahalems as i heard they are very heavy and put a lot of strain on the mobo

[edit] ok im gonna save the current bios settings to a profile and run your settings see what difference it makes

Ah - fair enuf, sounds like a cooler problem. In the meantime you may want to pull the overclock down a bit so the load temps are safe.

As for the megahalems - its a very nice cooler. Its hard to get hold of and expensive, but I think it was worth it for the cooling I get. As for weight - I believe it weighs the same as a TRUE and I haven't heard of any problems with their weight. Also, the megahalems has the best and tightest mounting system I have ever seen, it ain't going anywhere that's for sure.

when clocking down i did all the other settings you told me but i had trouble setting the memory multiplier to 20 i think you ment 2.0 cos in my bios the system memory multiplier (SPD) is set to [8.0] there is no 20 however it goes as low as [3.0] but no lower memory frequency is set to 1066 and 1360 there is an auto option available what should i do???

sorry to be a noob but im new to overclocking expecially with the new mobos

thank you

thanks mate how do i go about increasing the memory to 1600mgz do i need to fiddle with the cas settings when doing this??

thanks again pal...

ok...

i have downclocked the cpu to 3.4GHZ per core and ran the same test for the same amount of time here are the results on temp.. again no lockups or BSOD

[edit] i keep running cpu at 3.4ghz untill i remove the titan fenrir get my new cpu cooler and then load my 4ghz bios settings and test again

That looks better!

Those temperatures are definately safe and should see you out until you sort out the CPU cooler.

As for memory, you should locate the memory multiplier. If you set it to 9 (with a 170mhz bclk) you should be running the ram at 1530mhz- just under spec speed. You could try a value of 10 if you are feeling adventurous.

choices choices

which cooler should i choose i want to run at 4ghz clock and dont want temps to go higher than high 60oc in prime...

Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)

Asus Triton 88 Quiet CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775/LGA1366)

over budget option...

Prolimatech Megahalems Performance CPU Cooler (Socket 775/1366/AM2/AM3)
with 2 fans...

p.s. will the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler fit in an antec 902 gaming case or would i need to remove the back fan due to it having 2 push pull fan setup on each side???

thanks

To hit 4Ghz with sub 60 degree load temps you will need water cooling. My megahalems is only at 3.6GHz and 65 degrees load. But there are many good air coolers I'd recommend.

First i'd say megahalems :D (awesome cooling but expensive and difficult to get hold of).

For a great cooler with more availability get the TRUE (admittedly out of stock on OCUK now) with two of these noctua fans.

The Noctua NH-U12P is not as powerful as a fenrir in terms of cooling - so I would not recommend that for what you are wanting to do (nice quiet cooler though).

The asus is not paricularly powerful its just expensive, avoid.

As for 4GHz - I believe most people on air run their CPUs at Mid 70s - (any conformation would be appreciated), that is what you should probably aim for with an air cooler.

[update]

i went into bios and in the bios i cant jump to multiplier 9/170mhz BCLK for memory to run at 1530mhz... its currently set to 8 and the next jump is to 10 and that will push my memory beyond 1600mhz... should i set it to 10 and then check for stability via the memtest86 (5 passes) or would i burn out the memory help??? thanks

If I were you keep it at 8. On an i7 / X58 the memory will not bottleneck the system because the triple channel DDR3 bandwidth is inherently massive. If you whacked it up to 10 there is a good chance it will work but it may require more volts and definitely produce more heat for very little performance gain.

Also, if you are still looking for a cooler - the Megahalems is now on OCUK and the price is good considering the excellent performance.

ive just orderd

Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme
and
X2
120mm Sharkoon System Fan Power 39dB(A) 2400 rpm Case Fan with 81cfm!

these should do me fine i mean the fans are mighty?
