I am going to be buying a Core 2 E6600 shortly but was wondering does the retail CPU come with its own stock HSF.
I will have to sell my Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro though.

Regardless of whether it's AMD or Intel, when it's labelled "Retail" it means it comes with a stock heatsink + fan combo. If it's labelled "OEM" then it means you get the CPU and nothing else :)

Are the Retail heatsinks/fans any good?

I've found that with modern, more efficient CPUs they're more than adequate for some moderate overclocking. They're not all that quiet though.

Which product is it?

I can't give the competitor name but the item code is "OSA2216CQWOF" (Opteron 2216) The description on the site is just some generic blurb.

Hmmmmm. OSA2216GAA6CQ would be considered to be the retail version going by the AMD website.

*edit*

According to a certain US online retailer the OSA2216CQWOF is retail but "Cooling device not included - Processor Only". Seems the new Optys may have 2 retail versions rather than just retail and OEM (tray).

Oh that's strange. Oh well, the stock HSF usually gets replaced anyway. Just the WOF bit confused me as it made it out that it had a heatsink but no fan.

Yeah. And according to that retailer the OSA2216CQWOF still has the full 3 year guarantee despite not coming with a hsf.

So usually warranties are only valid if you use the stock HSF then become void if you use an after market cooler? OEM ones don't have warranties? Is that how it works?

Usually AMD and Intel don't offer warranties for OEM chips. You only get the retailers 12 month warranty. And yeah the retail versions 3 year warranty is voided if you use an aftermarket hsf, but they have to be able to prove that you didn't use their hsf.

I'm not sure how the warranties will work with these new Optys that don't come with a hsf. Maybe AMD have realised that aftermarket coolers work just as well (better in most cases) as their own.

Cheers for that. :) I think that people that own workstations don't usually overclock so wouldn't feel the need for an aftermarket cooler but like you said times are changing and people want better and quieter performance and stock stuff just doesn't cut it.
