Does it ever end.

mate, Go to halford, pick your self a copy of a haynes manual for your car and a member ship card at your local motor factors. it'll save you a load of cas as al your paying for is parts.
local garage which the aa dragged me to quoted me £400 odd quid for a new radiator after a stone destroyed it. cost me £39.99 for a second-hand one in good condition, and 25 minutes of my time.

You could have done all that work yourself and saved yourself a packet.

i had a lube service done on my lupo a month ago and was advised the pads were 80% worn and the tyres were just above legal limit. they were offering MOT's half price (£30) and i had it done last monday. it failed on the tyres (was charged nearly £50 a pop for 13" standard firestones! but i couldn't be bothered to get it done anywhere else - it was up on the ramp blah blah) anyway, they also gave an advisory on the wiper blades and wanted what i considered a high price to replace them so i didn't, they didn't give me an advisory on my brake pads though which did make me wonder wether they were trying to dupe me into replacing the brake pads during the service

And I thought I had it tough!

Just bought new brakes and two new rear bearings for the ST220 which came to £300.

My uncle is fitting it all free of charge though

Ohh and it's tax month aswell :(

your Garage is having your pants down.
Just my opinion of course. :)

Factual. Thats if the £20 for a bulb and £60 for the MOT is an indication of the other charges.

These prices are OK if coming from a Mercedes main dealer, but applied to a fiat it makes a mockery of even bothering with budget car brands.

Only one new strut?

Something to change in pairs if you value handling.

and what kind of "Mechanic" leaves pads on a car with 5% life left?

They make Krap Fit sound professional!

It was with a Alfa/Fiat/Audi specialist. Heard good things about them so used them.

And won't again I hope!

Well the MOT is due next month so I will get the pads changed then. I'm on holiday for 2 weeks from next week and the drive to work is only 4 miles total so it's not going to be used over the next month much.

My car isn't seen as a good handling car. In fact I don't really know what it's seen as :)

Man point fail. Why not learn how to do basic maintenance yourself? It's really not that hard.

Oh yeah, because I want to be changing the water pump, timing belt, tensioners and idlers on the car when I don't have much mechanical knowledge. Somehow I don't think this is the best idea as it's 'quite' a big job. Took them 4 hours.

Alfa/Fiat/Audi specialist is a bit of a random combination isn't it?

I could understand Alfa/Fiat or Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda but the above three seems a bit odd to me.

It's because they were a Alfa/Fiat specialist. Then one of the guy's who worked there bought a Audi A4, did loads of work on it himself and knows a lot about them now, so they are now a Alfa/Fiat/Audi specialist.

I'm not sure if i'd be happy taking my car to someone who called themselves a specialist of an entire manufacturer because he bought one of their cars and fixed it a lot :/

Sounds like a really bad deal to me, for a 9 year old 1.6 Fiat. And they can't, by law, charge you £60 for an MOT.

£20 for a bulb, Jesus wept!
