read a guide on virgin site, and decided to check what wifi channels were near me. i was on channel 6 and so were two others near by. i changed to channel 2 as that number was available. oddly the net seems slower on my laptop, just wondering is that just coincidence or do these channels mean anything ?

Wifi is made up of a number of frequency bands within the 2.4Ghz range. It's usually better to have 4 or 5 channels separation from other strong wifi signals in the area. So if there are lots of routers giving channel 6 try channel 1 or channel 11. I'm not quite sure why channel 2 is giving slower speeds as it's close enough to channel 1 to not make much difference. Maybe your access point or device is just better at mid range. Try channel 11 and see if it improves.
