Does Max Payne 3 bought at retail require steam?

As the title suggests. I have seen Max Payne 3 on the steam sale for £14.99 but since it is a massive download I'm somewhat put off. Does the retail version of the game require a steam activation or does it use some other kind of DRM.

If the retail game is still locked to steam then I might try and download it and save the money as they are both locked to my steam account. If the retail version is resalable then I might hold out for the disc version.

Thanks

No, it is not a steam game through retail. Unless it has changed since it came out but my release day retail copy does not activate on steam. It just uses Rockstars own online CD key check and then you login to your rockstar social club account when starting the game. No DVD is required in the drive to play.

I got it at retail for exactly this reason, its over 30gig to download.

Cool thanks for the info. I'll wait for the retail price to drop, steams download speeds are **** especially during the sales @ 30GB its just too much.

Is the game game a one time activation, is it permanently tied to your rockstar account preventing resale?

Cheers

Shouldn't be that bad surely?, I'm on crappy village ADSL and I had it downloaded overnight. I then intend to keep it on an external drive incase I somehow lose it and don't fancy downloading it again XD

ow and yes it's tied to you're social club account :/

Hmm might bite the bullet and get it off steam as the price is right and the retail copy is permanently linked to the rock star thing.

God I miss the days of jut buying a game, entering the cd key and playing without having to sign up to this and that....

cheers folks, looking forward to playing it as I'm a massive fan of the first two games!

Took me 3 days to download this from steam:(

Rather a hungry game on Vram i must say,got to knock down the AA from 8 to 4 as it exceeds 2gig.:eek::eek:

I bought it from the steam daily sale yesterday and it was downloaded in about 5 hours...

How long is it going to take to get it if you buy it retail ;)

Bought it from an e-shop for £19.50 delivered next day. Installed within the hour of opening and I have a box, manual, the game backed up on 4 DVDs plus a free max payne 3 t-shirt. It would have taken ages to download I have a 10Mb cable connection but steams downloads speeds are hit and miss a lot of the time, either way 30 gigs is a BIG download so no thanks.

Steam always goes 12mb/s when it's not sale time. I usually download and game in the morning at the weekend and tend to get the full speed so max payne 3 from steam downloaded in under 45minutes whilst I watched a single tv show :) Hope virgin goes 200mb soon just so I can replace my entire 500gb steam library in under 6 hours.

What is it with this game? Everything maxed and I'm getting framerates in the several 100's! Has someone tweaked my system while I wasn't looking?:p

Enjoying the game immensley, was slightly worried when players were complaining of lengthy unskippable cut scenes and dodgy bullet time mechanics, but I've found neither to be a problem. Gameplay and story are excellent imo, graphically very nice too.

30GB is a helluva lot, and the majority of UK ISPs have retarded fair usage policies where they'll gimp your speeds even if you have 'unlimited data'.

I'm loving the game, all maxed out on my GTX 580 with a smooth 60FPS (FXAA very high as MSAA kills the frame rate)

I had to set the sound to stereo in the options however as it defaulted to surround and I could hardly hear any audio in the cut scenes apart from Max's narration. At first I thought it was deliberate, ei Max is a drunk, deaf and disillusioned with the world around him lol.

I got a lot of dodgy audio in it myself. I think it was set to surround as default on mine, but I tried all of them and nothing really helped. It was a bit crackly and...weak I suppose would be the best way to describe it.
