Does memory size matter, 4850 vs 4870??

Would appreciate some advice.

Have been trying to decide on a graphics card setup to run with a Q6600, 8GB RAM and a 22" TFT.

Have looked at these options:

Two 4850 512mb in crossfire £265

Two 4850 1gb in crossfire £300

Two 4870 512mb in crossfire £346

Is there much benefit to getting the 1gb 4850's over the 512mb?

Is there much benefit to getting the 4870's over the 4850's?

Any advice would be helpful...

Does it matter?

Not really, not in the grand scheme of things.

A 1024MB 4870 is faster at higher resolutions than a 512MB version, but they're both great cards and at the levels they perform at, I'd question whether it's really noticeable outside of benchmarks.

Get the best you can afford, and use it, which is still the best advice overall I think! :)

EDIT: Welcome to the forums by the way!

What resolution will you be playing at? At 1680*1050 I thought a 4870 1GB was able to max most things out!

Apparently Sli and Crossfire gains are not that noticeable at the above resolution if that is what your playing on of course

why do u want 2 in crossfire? u say your monitor is a 22" so your res is only at 1680x1050 so you'll be cpu bottlenecking more if u go crossfire.

even a single 4850 at that res would run everything well..

my 4850 runs all my games very well at 1920x1200 with max settings

There are a few games out that benefit from a more powerful card at that res and the number will grow as newer games are released

If your going to X fire the cards, then i'd say the 4850 1 gig version's will be the one to go for, 2 x 4850's is essentially equivalent to a top end card, so it's worth having the extra memory, or you could get the new 4850 X2

it depends what res for the memory, if playing below 1680, then

For a 22inch I'm guessing it's 1680 x 1050 so why not just get one single 4870 1gb. That should be plenty for that res. Oh and if you're intent on crossifre just get the x2 version of the repective card.

If you want to play GTA IV, then yes 1GB would be needed if you wanted high textures.

I'd get 1GB if you don't plan on upgrading the GPU for a while though.

Or maybe for 300 quid you could get a 4850 X2 2gig, then you'll have 1GB memory and 2 GPU's on a single PCB.
