Does my dog have issues?

We have a pug and a frenchie, both about the same age (1 1/2 years). The pug has recently taken to intensely licking my face in the morning and at night time. They've both always been lickers, and we're not germophobes as such, so it's never been a problem. Neither are flexible enough to reach their own buttholes.

I do however find it a bit wierd how intently and scrupulously the pug goes at my ears. I thought I maybe wasn't paying enough attention to cleaning them (my ears), but even after a fortnight of extra attention he's still going for it. Then, as I was getting up to go to the football this morning, I rolled over as he was doing his usual service and notice he had a semi. You all know how big a pug is, and thus you can imagine how close this was to my face.

Is this normal behaviour?

Pups have a natural tendency to (sometimes obsessively) lick masters/other dogs. Maybe he doesn't know it's not appropriate, did you try to correct the behaviour? It could also be a sign of anxiety.

I'm not that fussed about the licking. We have a philosophy that as long as it's not destructive or negative, then their natural behaviour is the kindest way to treat them. Obviously I don't want my dog getting a boner when he licks my face though! Perhaps it was just a one off?

Thanks for the replies. We don't let them do as they please. We're trying to assert alpha dominance, but raising one puppy is hard enough! Two at the same time is a challenge, given they have different issues to be dealt with. The pug is generally ok but he's a wee wind up. He gets the frenchie irate, and then he lashes out sometimes (only at other dogs). Unfortunately, I don't have sole control of them; they're actually my girlfriends dogs. She went on a puppy buying spree...what can you do? They're loved, but don't have the structure dogs should have.

I'm not experienced with dogs tbf, I grew up with cats. Perhaps a gnarly tom cat will help put them in their place!?!

Sorry guys/gals, I've been heavy stuck in my uni coursework (last bit delivered yesterday...yay!), so haven't been on to reply. Thanks for all the replies!

A dog that can't lick it's own balls/ass is a degenerate / handbag pooch, not actually worthy of being called a dog.. best call it an overbread rat that expects to be carried.. Let it meet a real dog and see the outcome.. all bark no trousers.. If you want a dog, get one that isn't so inbred it has skull deformities, facial deformities (where it can't breathe) and hip deformities where it's guaranteed to get arthritis very early, (not easily spotted because these dogs are carried!) If I had a choice between a Ferret and a small dog, it'd be a ferret everytime, the ferret would probably be more intelligent and agile, most likely live longer.. most of these rat dogs die before 10..

That's lovely thanks... Though we didn't ask for them to be born, we took them, and fell in love with them. Whether their breeds are abhorrent to you is immaterial. Thanks for your opinion though.

You dont need to assert alpha dominance over your dogs. That theory was debunked ages ago! Dogs are not wolves so unsure why people treat them as one!

If you don't want him to lick you then instead ask him to do a alternative behaviour instead to help break the habit and then reward. Give him something more appropriate to do (in your eyes) i.e. once he starts licking, ask him for a hand touch

Well we've had a lot of conflicting advice; no idea what the proper method is tbh. I don't mind the licking so much, I was more worried that it was a wierd sexual thing!
