Does OCUKs Q6600 OC guarantee mean the rest failed?

As title really, does the new guaranteed overclockable CPU deal mean that they have been tested to that speed and that any that fail become just regular parts?

As in, if I buy a new Q6600 chip at the normal, non-guaranteed price, am I guaranteed a turkey of an OCing chip?

I remember an internet TV dealer who did this with pixel perfect LCD TVs. You paid a premium for the pixel perfect service, and all then ones that failed went out as normal, non-premium TVs. Was just wondering if that is the case with the Q6600 chips!

Every chip will overclock, just some might not overclock as much as others.

You'd do well to find a Q6600 that wont overclock to 1333fsb (3GHz) though.

i dont think overclockers test them i think they prolly just vary the guides depending on whether u get a 3.0ghz or 3.3ghz package... i recently bought a abit ip35pro bundle that came with a q6600 guaranteed to 3.3... well it worked, i was able to install windows and run on 3.3 but it wasnt stable in prime. so i ignored the guide did some research and uppped some voltages. am now at 3.4ghz prime stable so i guess it all worked out in the end.

Very much doubt that it would be worth their while to test them. You're likely paying extra to have the right to further 'lucky dips' to find one that will definitely run at X speed.

It'd be pretty dire if they did test them all, actually. I wouldn't want to buy stuff that had been messed about with for a pointless sorting process.

There was a pretty, well actually it got quite ugly :) thread on this. The official statement is that they don't test the retail versions ie the seal isn't broken but they sort of can tell from batch numbers which ones are the good ones but as pointed out before even the worst performing (in terms of needing more vCore) will get up to 3Ghz fairly easily.

Yeah, a bad Q6600 will do 3.2-3.3 easy....even a B3 stepping really.
My G0 won't go beyond 3.0GHz. On a Maxiumus Formula. Hardly par for the course, but don't take it as standard that you'll be hitting a 800MHz overclock. It seems there's a fair few of the latest ones that's not doing quite as well as they were a month back.

No, it means if it doesn't run the stated overclock you can return it just as sure as if it was DOA. Takes the guesswork out, puts the risk on the retailer, and of course they'll do their best to avoid bad batches because that would increase their returns.

Of course you pay for that privilege so you have to choose if you want to take that risk or not.

i recon every Q6600 G0 will do 3.6ghz, some will be hotter than others. ofcourse if you have a good motherboard, ie Abit IP35 Pro

ocuk sell guarenteed to 3 or 3.3, i think thats real easy. no worries, and OCUK think that otherwise they wouldnt want to be dealing with all the people returning them. and those that do prob have bad motherboards

What stepping? I find that a bit hard to believe. I've never heard of a q6600 that won't do over 3ghz.

Of course not, don't be silly.

The only time I bought a guarenteed overclocked chip from here (P3-650E @ 866) I don't believe it had been pre-tested. Obvioulsy things may have changed now.

Actually there does appear to be CPU selection going on. The stock levels are different :(

It's extremely annoying because now I have to break up my order and go to two suppliers. I'm not paying the same price as everywhere else for a CPU that has been batch number split.

so i guess if there is batch number splitting going on the lesser (hotter, worse clocking) batches will be sold as the normal Q6600 then, reducing your chance of getting a good clocker if you buy a normal one?
