If you overclock the CPU or GPU will do a bit more crunching. But it will use more power, both for the processor, and the cooling.

Given many of us run stuff 24/7, is the added ppd worth the added energy use?

It all depends what project you are running.

If you are running some of the folding projects then very much yes as the points rewarded are not linear they increase greatly the faster the workunit is returned.

If you are running boinc then not so much, if you are willing to run more rigs its much better from a power usage point of view than one fast overclocked rig.

Depends if you can overclock and undervolt.. I know in some projects memory speed isn't as important as core speed, so some gpu's you can downclock the memory and upclock the shaders. Ending up with a balanced power curve.

But at the end of the day its what you cost your reasons to do this at. I mean for some its the science, and the potential of finding cures for diseases that may affect your life and the life of the ones you care about. For others it might be that this is their hobby, I mean is it any worse or expensive than other hobbies? I know people who spend 1000's on model train sets or collecting matchbox cars or drinking or getting off their face etc etc etc.

So it's about trying to find the sweet spot.

We are all being increasingly told to save the environment. When DC stuff first came about it was trying to use spare computer cycles. Now as things are more efficient, if the PC is less used, everything throttles back. Folding, BOINC, etc works against that efficiency. For some projects like trying to find aliens, perhaps the environmental concerns can't override the science, If you are searching for solutions to health, DC can be more beneficial.

I suppose I need to get a power consumption meter so I can try and decide at what level of overclock in folding is the most rewarding for PPD versus power use, and that changes for different PC configurations.

Didn't you run a thread like this in May? :)

At the end of the day I don't think DC will make much of a dent in the environment personally, but then I'm an enviro-skeptic at heart. :)

Old age and too much booze has damaged my brain cells, and my memory must be fading :(

But this is slightly different as it's more about accepting, if I am going to fold, what is the best return on the cost to my pocket, as well as cost to the environment. That thread was whether we could even justify DC stuff versus the environment.

If you went with ecotricity - 100% of your energy use would be accounted for from renewables.

The most amazing part is ecotricity's price per unit is now *fractionally* less than the big 6 (0.7p less per unit) which might not sound a lot, but since this thread is all about min/maxing I feel it should be noted.

General rule of thumb for me with a CPU is to check what the auto voltage is at stock, then lock it at that and push the clocks as high as they can go, that way it feels like I'm getting something for nothing.
