Does Philips x2 need an Amp?

An owner might want to chime in but based on a brief audition, no, they don't really need an amp.

Specs indicate that it has a fairly high sensitivity (100dB/mw) and the it's low impedance (~30 Ohms) means pretty much any built in/integrated won't face any difficulties in delivering the required power.

No they don't need an amp but as with all decent headphones you will unlock their full potential if used with an amp. You will enjoy the sound either way though,

I have the X1s and they don't need an amp but definitely benefit from one. As for which one, I don't have much experience with higher end stuff but hear many good things about Schiit products. If you don't have a DAC already, a Bifrost Uber and a Lyr 2 might be a good combo for about £655.

You do not need to spend £655 for a pair of X2's

yes you can and it wouldn't hurt but I honestly think you should consider spending around 2-300 on a DAC/AMP combo and seeing how you feel about it. Maybe even less.

Upto you of course it's your money but at that mark you can get some serious kit and you'd need to go test things in a store. To get the best deal for you.

Completely agree with the above.

I am assuming the X2's are your only cans?

If so, with that budget, I seriously suggest you sell the X2's, buy a cheap amp/dac like the Schiit Magni/Modi and spend the bulk on some top tier headphones like Audeze LCD2's.

Spending that amount on amplification for the X2's is like trying to polish a turd.

Say up to £800

The Bifrost/Lyr 2 combo is always solid as suggested above, maybe a bit overkill but a worthwhile investment if you plan on upgrading your headphones at a later date.

If you wanted something a bit cheaper, take a look at the Matrix Mini-I Pro, a combination DAC/amp that is very versatile, pretty neutral sounding, and will comfortably drive the X2's.
