Does RAM hold your CPU Multi back?

I have only just really got into overclocking but managed a nice very stable 3.8ghz from my i7 870. CPU Multi is 21 as going to 22 increases my RAM mhz well over its 1600mhz limit.

Just wondering if its just as easy as replacing the RAM for some 2000mhz stuff so I can run at Multi 22?

Maybe its not that simple?

Thanks!

u sure its the multi ur changing ?
as it shouldn't effect ram at all.

also, most cpus are multi locked, so u can only reduce them not increase them.

the usual way to overclock is to increase the bclk which also increase the ram frequency.

you can however adjust how the ram scales against the bclk, so u can have a higher bclk without increasing the ram speed.

it all depends on the motherboard and what its capable of thou

Assuming you are talking about the RAM multi and your RAM frequency increasing as you increase the BClock, yes it is possible for the RAM to bottleneck a CPU OC. But, you could always just drop the RAM multi if you don't want to buy new memory. There is no guarantee that your memory controller will continue to scale up to 2000 but a 2000 kit would be more flexible.

Thanks guys,

I have a Gigabyte UD2 motherboard and was sitting happily at 3.8ghz from an i7 870 until yesterday. Got home from work and it was sat on a blank screen with a huge mouse pointer on the screen

That was after a week of CPU load at 100% so I assumed everything was great. Wouldn't mind taking it a bit higher whilst also gaining extra stability.

Thinking about changing the akasa freedom for a Noctua D14 and the Patriot sector 5 1600mhz for Corsair 2000mhz

settings until yesterday were
Multi - 21
Bclk - 181
RAM - 1440Mhz

Thoughts?
