Does S.M.A.R.T still slow HD performance?

Nothing worth loosing sleep over, I tried it all in past, killing Smart completely using the Hitachi Feature Tool, and it made no difference, but killing Acoustic Management did, esp on my Raptors but makes it SEEK louder.

I have heard that SMART will slow the drive a little, but nothing noticeable.

I was setting up a friends computer the other day and the S.M.A.R.T settings were Enabled, Disabled and Automatic? What would automatic be for or is it that not all drives support SMART?

doesn't smart also detect errors? if that is true wouldn't that be worth losing 1 / 2% speed over? :)

smart will report back on any hard drive values which vary from a certain "safe" range.
Itll not necessarily stop a sudden hard drive crash but in most cases it will be a gd warning in advance that something is wrong with the hard drive.
