My dad bought two programs a few months ago, Error Smart (www.errorsmart.com) and a program simply called Antispyware (www.antispyware.com)

A couple of days ago some spyware got in where a Windows looking popup would appear saying the computer is infected and to clicked on the box.

I installed Spybot and after a full scan it identified error smart and antispyware as being bogus programs and actually adware/spyware itself.

Anyway, i uninstalled them and then let spybot fix everything. After a reboot the popup box was still comming up. I clicked the box and app calling itself XP SecurityCenter popped up wanted money to fix stuff. XP SecurityCenter turned out to be a fairly well known scam/virus/spyware type thing. Anyhoo, i eventually found a program to get rid of it and all is fine.

The thing is, even after uninstalling Spybot i cannot load antispyware.com or errorsmart.com to check them out.

So my question is this: Has Spybot lied about error smart and antispyware and blocked me from accessing their websites?

Cheers.

[Edit] Antispyware.com and errorsmart.com both load fine on my desktop PC so my dads laptop had definitely been blocked by spybot even though i uninstalled it. Antispyware and errorsmart look totally legit to me.

Couple of quick Google's would suggest that both are actually spyware.

I would tend to believe that myself, I have used Spybot for years now and find it one of the best around. Generally speaking, if Spybot says it's spam, then it usually is.

Have you tried running a Hijack This logfile to see what their site says about it?

Could you link me to what you found with your googling? I googled them too and didn't really find anything bad.

I'll post a hijack this logfile when i get a chance later on.

Thanks a lot guys. I've rid him of both now. I dont blame him for buying them though. I'm usually pretty good spotting whats dodgy and whats not but both of these programs looked ok to me. Oh well, you live and learn.

Yeah, these scammers are getting better and better. Have to be really careful what you buy/download these days. At least you got it sorted.

I'd be more concerned that they have your Dad's bank card details now.... might want to do something about that (like getting his cards changed... or am I actually being uber paranoid?)

I've had those awfull pop ups before, they are a nightmare to remove, I think a few times I got rid of them but in the end once I just re installed Windows it was taking so much time.
