Hi all,

Quick question please.

When you play / stream DivX files via your PS3 to your HD TV (using HDMI connection) - Does the PS3 upscale the actual video?

Thanks

Yup it does. And doesn't do to bad a job of it either.

DIVX movies look good on my 1080P Viera Plasma. But no where near as good as Blu-rays...OMG :O

Watched Starship Troopers on Xmas day and Bladerunner last night. Blew me away.

How do you know the PS3 is upscaling them and not just your TV upscaling them? (I am sure there is a simple answer, but my mind is blank at the moment).

Well the PS3 is outputting at whatever resolution you've got it - in my case 720p so it will be scaling anything with a lower res than that UP. Then the TV will also do some upscaling to make the picture fill the screen which is 768p.

Yeah but say you are on composite etc. Your PS3 is sending a low res signal to HDTV and the TV does all upscaling.

The PS3 will scale up or down to 576i and then the TV will scale up to match its native res.

Now I am confused (although I understand what you are saying).

On my 360 (component) DVD upscaling is not supported. So I thought this meant that the 360 sends a 576i signal to TV and that upscales it. End result is you see a "fullscreen" image that your TV scaled up.

I guess what I mean is, unless you have a 1080P native monitor (or 1:1 pixel mapping) your TV will always have to do some scaling? (Assuming the video signal from your console never matches your TV res unless 1080P/720P/1:1 panel).

Correct, My PS3 sends my TV a 1080p signal and for divx movies it displays it with 1:1 mapping so the PS3 does all the up scaling. I could also set the PS3 to output 720P and my TV would then have to scale it to fill the whole screen. However playing most games it reverts back to sending 720p even though 1080 is set in the menu as it cannot render the game at that resolution and the tv (AV Amp in my case) has to do the scaling

To answer the question, yes the PS3 will scale Divx. It upscales almost all videos it can play.
