Does this engine sound right?

I have a Hyundai i10 which for some time now I am sure ‘doesn’t feel quite right’. It is a small car with a small engine, however it feels allot laggier than it should be. Broadly speaking Hyundai don’t care because its not an obvious in your face fault and I am doubting myself whether its some sort of mechanical hypochondria!

My suspicion lays with the alternator. The following audio clip is me pressing and releasing the accelerator in second gear at about 15-20mph. When the accelerator is released, after a lag of 0.5 to 1 second something spins up. This can be heard clearly i think at 12, 15, 18 and 21 seconds. It usually goes away by touching the accelerator again.

Are these normal sounds or is something spinning roughly?

its hard to say but it does sound like you either have an after market air filter or a blowing exhaust.
where did you record from?
i could hear a very sigh change in pitch / extra noise and really you need to have the bonnet open and look at the pulleys and see if you can see anything wobbling, worn belts ect.

None of the above, as far as I am aware! Recording is an AKG d5 dynamic mic wedged in the engine bay recording to laptop. I don't like to do things by half :p It is only prevalent with drive chain engaged so cant inspect when in motion!

Edit: I added a second clip with the engine under slightly more stress. It sounds to me like after releasing the accelerator, the alternator (or something) spins up shredding itself. Its not a pleasant mechanical sound.

Sounds completely normal, from those clips at least. Almost impossible to tell, mind. Best to get someone to look at it in the real world.

If I am hearing correctly at the points you mentioned, it sounds like tappet noise you are hearing to me.

Have you checked the oil level, also, from a quick read it seems that old oil in these can cause tappet noise. When was it last oil serviced?

Servicing is all up to date.

What has that got to do with anything?

He isn't wrong, although in this case I feel the car is slower than it should be. It feels like there is an extraneous deceleration force somewhere in the drive chain. The boxy small shape of the vehicle makes it prone to nose lift/dive when accelerating and decelerating. The declarative force coasting in gear is, in my opinion, excessively noticeable. To drive, it feels like you are constantly braking a little bit (not sticky brakes, no excessive build up of heat)

If it sounds similar to that (which it does), you have a loose timing chain.
