Hi all,

My dads giving me his old PC that I bought and built for him years ago. I'm going to use it as a base for a new gaming build.

From it I'll be using an Antec 300 case, 500GB HDD, X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card and other small bits (Wi-fi card etc)

So to bring the core components up to date and get games running maxed out, I'm thinking of buying these:

Trouble is, I'm so out the loop hardware wise now being an Apple fanboy these last few years. But from doing some reading, these seem like pretty high end components so shouldn't have any issue running the latest and greatest

Will be gaming at 1920x1080

Thanks :)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-128-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752 - fiver more, better cooler, free game and a slight overclock.

Get XMS3 or the Kingston Hyper Blu ram, that kind of ram can obstruct a heatsink and you won't see much difference in performance. Also 4GB is enough for gaming.

Unless you'll be using CPU heavy applications where the i7s hyperthreading will help, go for the i5 it's near identical for gaming.

PSU is fine but take a look at this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-001-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1497 - XFX are top quality and it's modular for the same price.

Ok sounds good to me, I'll go for the i5. I was wondering if the Hyperthreading was really worth it

Good spot on the graphics card too

Thanks for the tips mate :)

So you components added up come to around £800 so taking mootheads points into account you can fit a 60GB SSD:p

MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE DIRT3 Game £205.99

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £161.99

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £144.98

Corsair Performance 3 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CSSD-P364GB2-BRKT) £119.99

XFX 750W Black Edition Modular Power Supply £96.98

Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £33.59

Corsair A50 High-Performance CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £24.98

Total : £800.51 (includes shipping : £10.00)

As moothead said, i5 is just as good for gaming, the XFX PSU is a top quality PSU (both the Corsair and XFX are based on SeaSonic designs, so both top quality), and low profile RAM will make adding a CPU cooler a lot less hassle.
This is a very nice, feature rich motherboard, and comes with a USB 3.0 front panel too :)

Brilliant, cheers guys

Only reason I went for the 30GB SSD was because it would purely be for the OS, so with that in mind would you still recommend spending the extra on the 64GB?

idd the i5 is on par with the i7 with high res games, setup should play all games maxed. Good luck with the build :)

Yeah because then you can put all your applications and games on too!! :D

I like Sk82jack's build. Probably what I'd go for personnally. Maybe change the Force for a Vertex 120GB / Bigfoot, and take 8GB or just take the m4, but that's just me :) This will XFire easy, good mobo, good PSU and cooler.

Yeah I'm going to go with that build :)

Only change I'm going to make is to upgrade to 8GB, only because my last PC 3 years ago that I built had 4GB, so to feel like a proper upgrade I'll have to go 8 :p

Oh yeah...meant to ask...your HDD and DVD drive are both SATA right? As most Sandy Bridge boards don't have IDE connections.

I'm so excited :)

As much as I love my iMac, I've always missed that tinkering that comes with a built PC. I used to love taking it apart once a fortnight, giving it all a good clean, constantly trying to make it look tidier inside. I'm not sure I've missed all the tweaking and stuff of Windows, but with Windows 7 I'm sure it's not as bad as it used to be with XP in getting max performance out of it, so I can still have the ease of use I have with OSX.

I would go with sk82jack's build, although... I would change the current SSD becuase it's 64GB for £120. where as if you get the OCZ Agility 3 60GB it is faster and £20 less.

I did see it but I've heard a lot of bad things about the Agiliy 3's.

Their fail rate is meant to be quite high and so is their DOA.

If you do wanna save £20 however, I would go with the Crucial M4.

uhmm, I've also just been reading up some reveiws seems your right :p.
I would deffinatly consider the Crucial M4. quite a beast :D!

Go for the Crucial M4. It's one of the best for getting close to its advertised speeds too whereas the agility 3s have to be run in a specific benchmark application to reach the advertised speeds. It's also a lot more reliable. Shame you missed the deal yesterday though, only a tenner in the end though I guess since you're spending ~800 quid anyway.

Happy building :D.

+1 for the Crucial SSD. The OCZ Agility series are well known for having issues a friend of mine has bought one and he is having constant lock ups when he uses Firefox plus other things.

Stoner81.
